sympathetic: compassionate, understanding
In English, the term 'sympathetic' has a few meanings, but the primary sense of the term is 'understanding' or 'favorably inclined'.
Management wasn't very sympathetic to my request for more money. They really don't understand that I need a higher salary.
UK: I understand your problem and sympathise with you.
US: My boss is very unsympathetic.
