The imperfect subjunctive

Me pidió que cantara/cantase en su grupo.

She asked me to sing in her group.

No creo que bebiera/bebiese tanto vino.

I don't think he drank that much wine.

The imperfect subjunctive is conjugated as follows:

Hablar

hablara / hablase
hablaras / hablases
hablara / hablase
habláramos / hablásemos
hablarais / hablaseis
hablaran / hablasen

Beber

bebiera / bebiese
bebieras / bebieses
bebiera / bebiese
bebiéramos / bebiésemos
bebierais / bebieseis
bebieran / bebiesen

Vivir

viviera / viviese
vivieras / vivieses
viviera / viviese
viviéramos / viviésemos
vivierais / vivieseis
vivieran / viviesen

Note: Both forms are common and used interchangeably, with the exception of the polite mode that favours one of them.

Quisiera un plato de paella, por favor.

I would like a plate of paella, please.
