Hacer preguntas: estructura de la interrogación

  • When asking questions that can be answered with (yes) or no:

(Subject) + verb + object? (it has the same structure as an affirmative sentence; there’s no need to change the order of the words or use auxiliaries).

—¿Fuiste a Guadalajara? —Sí, el año pasado.

—Did you go to Guadalajara? —Yes, last year.

—¿Magda cenará con nosotros? —Sí, llegará a las ocho.

—Will Magda have dinner with us? —Yes, she’ll be here at eight.

  • When asking for specific information:

Interrogative adverb + verb + (subject) + (object)?

¿Dónde vives?

Where do you live? Here, the subject “you” is understood and may be omitted, but ¿Dónde vives tú? is also a valid question.

¿Cuánto cuesta una caña?

How much is a beer?
