Usos del presente de subjuntivo

We use the present subjunctive in the following cases:

  • To express wishes or feelings:

Ojalá viva cien años VIVIR.

I hope she lives for a hundred years. VIVIR

Me gusta que estés contento ESTAR.

I like that you're happy. ESTAR

  • To express doubt or probability:

Quizás mañana sea demasiado tarde SER.

Maybe tomorrow is too late. SER

Dudo que Ana llegue tarde LLEGAR.

I doubt Ana will arrive late. LLEGAR

  • To evaluate actions:

Es bueno que comas fruta COMER.

It's good that you eat fruit. COMER

No es bueno que tengas fiebre TENER.

It's not good that you have a fever. TENER

  • After negation with creer (to believe), parecer (to appear) and pensar (to think):

No creo que lea este libro LEER.

I don't think he'll read this book. LEER

No pienso que vayan a la playa IR.

I don't think they 're going to the beach. IR

No me parece bien que trabajen tan tarde TRABAJAR.

I don't think it's right that they work so late. TRABAJAR

  • To form the negative imperative:

¡No habléis tan alto! HABLAR

Don't speak so loudly! HABLAR
