To say “not as…”, the structure is:
- nicht so (not as) + adjective (+ noun) + wie (as)
Ihr wart nicht so schlau wie wir.
You were not as smart as us.
Ihr habt nicht so viele Kunden wie wir.
You don't have as many clients as we do.
For comparisons of equality, the structure is:
- so (as) / gleich (equally) + adjective (+ noun) + wie (as)
Sie verdient nun gleich viel wie er.
She now earns exactly as much as he does.
Die Party war so schön wie letztes Jahr.
The party was just as great as last year's.
Sie hat so viel Erfolg wie du.
She has as much success as you do.
To express that something is “more” or “greater” than something else, the structure is:
- adjective + ‑er ending (+ als, “than”)
- mehr (more) + noun + als (than)
Ich bin kleiner als du.
I am shorter than you.
Sie sprechen mehr Sprachen als wir.
They speak more languages than we do.
