Les verbes être et avoir au présent in het Frans

Je suis triste (I am sad). The verb être is irregular: être, présent. Example: je suis fatigué ce matin (I am tired this morning). Note: certain letters are not pronounced at the end of the word, such as -s and -t : je suis , tu es , il est , etc.

Il est triste (He is sad). Examples: elle est française (she is French); il est avocat (he is a lawyer); il est petit (he is short).

Vous êtes tristes (You are sad, plural “you”). Note that the -s at the end of vous is pronounced (like a “z”) when it comes before a vowel (like the one at the start of êtes) . Example: Les amis, vous êtes tristes aujourd'hui ! (My friends, you are sad today!).

Ils sont tristes and elles sont tristes both mean “They are sad”. Ils is masculine and elles is feminine – we'll tell you more soon. Example: mes parents sont très contents (my parents are very happy). They've always wanted you to learn French, right?

J'ai rendez-vous (I have a meeting). The verb avoir avoir, présent (to have) is irregular. As well as using it to talk about things we possess, we also use it to give our age. Examples: j'ai 35 ans (I'm 35 years old, literally “I have 35 years”); j'ai un vélo (I have a bicycle).

Tu as rendez-vous (you have a meeting), which is the verb avoir in the present tense avoir, présent. We also use avoir (to have) in certain fixed expressions to talk about sensations such as hunger or thirst, or being hot or cold. Example: - Tu as faim ? - Oui, j'ai très faim (-Are you hungry? -Yes, I'm very hungry).

Nous avons rendez-vous (We have a meeting). In this case, we pronounce the -s of nous (with a “z” sound) because it is followed by a vowel (avons). Example: nous avons rendez-vous au bar (we are meeting at the bar, literally “we have a meeting at the bar”).

Vous avez rendez-vous (You have a meeting). This is another case in which we pronounce the final -s as a “z”, to link vous and avez. Example: -Vous avez rendez-vous avec Nadia ? - Oui (-Do you have a meeting with Nadia? -Yes).
