Look at the images and complete the sentences correctly to describe what Roger did.

Roger a quitté 1 son bureau.

Roger est arrivé 2 au parc.

Roger s'est assis 3.

1 quitté :

Roger a quitté son bureau (Roger left his office) uses the verb quitter (to leave) in the passé composé (perfect tense) quitter, passé composé. When forming the past participle of verbs ending in -er (like quitter), we remove the -er and replace it with -é (quitté). Other examples: chanter (to sing) → chanté (sang); manger (to eat) → mangé (ate); jouer (to play) → joué (played).

1 mangé :

Roger a mangé (Roger ate) uses the verb manger (to eat) in the perfect tense manger, passé composé. Roger is definitely not eating in this image! Example: Théo a mangé une glace (Théo ate an ice cream).

1 cherché :

Roger a cherché (Roger searched) uses the verb chercher (to search, to look for) in the perfect tense chercher, passé composé. Roger isn't searching for anything in this image. Example: Anna a cherché ses clés (Anna looked for her keys).

2 arrivé :

Roger est arrivé au parc (Roger arrived at the park) uses the verb arriver (to arrive) in the passé composé (perfect tense) arriver, passé composé. Note: We form the perfect tense of most verbs with avoir, but we use être + past participle (here, arrivé) with certain verbs, including some verbs that indicate movement (here, arriver). Another example: je suis arrivé à Paris (I arrived in Paris).

2 tombé  :

Roger est tombé (Roger fell) uses the verb tomber (to fall) in the perfect tense tomber, passé composé. We don't see Roger falling in this image. Example: mon frère est tombé à vélo (my brother fell off his bike).

2 monté :

We could say Roger est monté dans sa chambre (Roger went upstairs to his room), with monter (to go up) in the perfect tense monter, passé composé. However, that's not what Roger is doing in this image.

3 assis :

Roger s'est assis (Roger sat down) uses the verb s'asseoir (to sit down) in the perfect tense s'asseoir, passé composé. In the perfect tense, pronominal verbs (sometimes known as reflexive verbs) like s'asseoir are conjugated with être in the present tense (here, est) + past participle (here, assis). The feminine form of the past participle is assise. Examples: Léa s'est assise sur une chaise (Léa sat down on a chair); Tom s'est levé à 8 heures (Tom got up at 8 o'clock).

3 allongé  :

Roger s'est allongé (Roger lay down) uses the verb s'allonger (to lie down) in the perfect tense s'allonger, passé composé. It isn't correct here as Roger is sitting on a park bench. Another example: Tom s'est allongé sur son lit (Tom lay down on his bed).

3 levé :

Roger s'est levé (Roger stood up) uses the passé composé (perfect tense) of the verb se lever (to stand up) s'allonger, passé composé. It isn't correct here as Roger is sitting on a park bench. Another example: Paul s'est levé de son siège (Paul got up from his seat).
