- D'où êtes-vous ? - D'Allemagne (-Where are you from? -From Germany). We often use je viens de (I come from) + the country name to refer to our origins and after the question d'où êtes-vous ? (where are you from?) or d'où venez-vous ? (where do you come from?). Example : - D'où venez-vous ? - Je viens de Belgique (-Where do you come from? -I come from Belgium).

- D'où êtes-vous ? - D'Espagne (-Where are you from? -From Spain). If you come from Spain then you are espagnol (Spanish, if you are a man) or espagnole (Spanish, if you are a woman). Examples: Penélope Cruz vient d'Espagne (Penélope Cruz comes from Spain); Pedro Almodóvar est espagnol (Pedro Almodóvar is Spanish). 

- D'où êtes-vous ? - De Suisse (-Where are you from? -From Switzerland). If you come from Suisse (Switzerland), then you are suisse (Swiss), confusingly. Examples: Genève est en Suisse (Geneva is in Switzerland); cette femme est suisse (this woman is Swiss).

- D'où êtes-vous ? - Des États-Unis (-Where are you from? -From the United States). The word États-Unis is full of pronunciation surprises. The É is pronounced (so far, so good); the second -t- (États) is not pronounced, but the first -s- (États) is pronounced, because it comes before a vowel sound (Unis). A man from les États-Unis (the USA) is américain, and a woman is américaine. Examples: ce groupe vient des États-Unis (this group is from the US); Naomi est américaine (Naomi is American).
