-How many countries are there in the UK? -There are 4 (- Combien de pays y a-t-il au Royaume-Uni ? - Il y en a 4), avec how many devant un nom pluriel dénombrable comme countries (1 country → 4 countries). Ex. : -How many cars do you have? -I only have one (- Combien de voitures as-tu ? - J'en ai une seule).

On emploie how much devant un nom indénombrable (comme knowledge : connaissance, art : art et energy : énergie), mais pas devant countries. Ex. : -How much water do you drink per day? -About 2 litres (- Combien d'eau tu bois par jour ? - Environ 2 litres).

-How much food does your cat eat? -A lot! (- Combien de nourriture mange ton chat ? - Beaucoup !), avec how much devant un nom indénombrable (ici, food). Ex. : -How much pepper do you put in the sauce? -Just a teaspoon (- Combien de poivre tu as mis dans la sauce ? - Juste une petite cuillère).

On emploie how much devant un nom indénombrable (comme air : air, salt : sel et freedom : liberté), et pas devant un nom pluriel dénombrable comme people. Ex. : -How much rain did you get? -It rained all day! (- Combien de pluie tu t'es pris ? - Il a plu toute la journée !)

-How much is this sandwich? -5 dollars (- Combien coûte ce sandwich ? - 5 dollars). On emploie how much + verbe to be To be, present simple tense (ici, is : (il) est) pour demander le prix. Ex. : -How much is this jacket? -Only 15 dollars, it's on sale! (- Combien coûte cette veste ? - 15 dollars seulement, elle est en soldes !) 

On emploie how many devant un nom dénombrable comme dans -How many guests did you invite? -Around 80 (- Combien de personnes tu as invitées ? - Environ 80 !), mais pas pour demander le prix.
