caught Polly's attention: Polly writes "What drew my interest... was the large sack he was carrying in his left hand". The expression "to draw one's interest" means "to attract one's interest" or "to catch one's attention". Example: The dancing bear "drew the interest" of the passing children.
didn't surprise Polly: The sentence "Horatio's large sack didn't surprise Polly" indicates that Polly is accustomed to seeing Horatio with a large sack, or that seeing Horatio with a sack is unsurprising, which is not the case here. Polly's use of the expression "to draw one's interest" actually indicates that she is seeing something unusual.
