Exercice 1
Hannah says "If it weren't for all the perfume in the air, I'd probably be asleep by now."
What does she mean?
What does she mean?
Hannah says "If it weren't for all the perfume in the air, I'd probably be asleep by now."
What does she mean?
What does she mean?
This is not the best choice. In fact, it is the perfume which is keeping Hannah awake, not making her feel tired.
This is the right answer here. The construction "if it weren't for... then..." is used to explain one thing because of the presence of another. Here are some more examples: "If it weren't for my daughter, I would have moved to Australia years ago", "If it weren't for the rain, I would have gone to the park today". In the dialogue, Hannah is saying that she would have fallen asleep if there hadn't been so much perfume in the air at the trade fair.
This is not the best choice. Hannah is tired, but this sentence does not mean that she is obliged to sample the perfumes.
