There is no need to use conditional terms (would, could, should, etc) in this exercise.

Fill in the gaps below with the correct forms of the verbs or expressions.
There is no need to use conditional terms (would, could, should, etc) in this exercise.

Yesterday, Bob [not done] was about 1 to switch on his computer when the power to the Delavigne offices cut out. 'I really wish that I [not done] had bought 2 that back-up power supply when I was in the store last week,' he [not done] thought 3 to himself. 'Bruno [not done] will kill 4 me if his work has been lost.'
1 was about: 'Was about to' is used here to show that Bob was 'on the point of doing something when another action occurred' (the power cut out). The past tense is needed here because the action took place in the past (indicated by the word 'yesterday').
2 had bought: The past perfect must be used here. When the verb 'to wish' is used to express regret in the past, the next verb takes the past perfect tense. Using 'wish' expresses a conditional desire in the past: I wish I had gone to the wedding, I wish I hadn't eaten the ice cream.
3 thought: Bob is referring to the past ('yesterday') so the past tense (preterit) form of the verb 'to think' is required. 'To think' is an irregular verb: think/thought/thought.
4 will kill: The idea of Bruno 'killing' Bob is a possibility which may arrive in the future, if Bruno's work has been lost. Therefore, the simple future tense is appropriate. The simple future tense is formed with the auxiliary 'will' and the infinitive form of the verb (kill).

True or False? Kevin tells Jean that his life may be in danger.

True or False? Kevin tells Jean that his life may be in danger.
This statement is true. Kevin warns Jean that if he goes through with his plan to fly to Kalackistan, he could "be killed".
This statement is not false.
Exercice 3
In this report, Ray Upton describes an accident.

From the list below, select all the TRUE statements about the accident.

In this report, Ray Upton describes an accident.

From the list below, select all the TRUE statements about the accident.
This is a true statement. Ray reports that on Highway One, there is "a multiple vehicle collision blocking traffic in both directions". A "collision" refers to the accident itself, and Ray's statement that traffic is "blocked" tells us that circulation on the freeway is being slowed or impeded. The term "traffic jam" describes this slow moving traffic.
This statement is false. Ray says that "several injuries have been reported along with at least one fatality, maybe more". Although he does not know the final figures, he knows that some people have been hurt and that there has been at least one death.
This statement is false. Ray Upton says that the traffic is blocked as "firefighters are trying desperately to reach the scene of the accident". The verb "to reach" describes the arrival at a spot or destination in this context. The firefighters have not yet arrived at the scene of the accident because of the cars blocking them. Firefighters, along with the police and paramedics are part of a group called "Emergency Services".
This statement is false. Ray Upton says that "at least one fatality" has been reported. A "fatality" is an injury resulting in death. "At least" one person was killed in this accident and maybe more. The term "fatality" is often used in the context of military conflicts, however we often hear the term on the news, nearly every night unfortunately.

This is a true statement. Xavier died while trying to make a new fragrance called "Liquid Dynamite". In the text we read that Xavier "was trying to create an experimental new fragrance called "Liquid Dynamite", when he accidentally mixed some dangerous chemicals together."
Slow down, partner! What's with this violent attitude?! This is the only statement here which is false. Bruno and Xavier's partnership ended when Xavier died, not because Bruno killed him! "To kill (someone)" is to end their life, by force or other means.
This is a true statement. In the text it says that "Xavier taught Bruno all that he knew about herbs, flowers, alcohols and chemicals." Note the difference between "teach" and "learn": the verb "to learn" describes the passive act of "acquiring" knowledge or information, while "teaching" describes giving or imparting information. This indicates that Bruno "learned" a lot from Xavier.

This statement is not true. Philip never "confesses" or "admits" that he has killed someone.
This statement is not true. Philip asks Brian for some information, but never explicitly asks about a mystery of any kind.
This statement is true. Philip calls Brian to ask him questions at first about Delavigne's return policy (the company's rules for exchanging and refunding its products), including questions about receiving a full cash refund.
This statement is true. Philip calls Brian to ask him questions at first about Delavigne's return policy (the company's rules for exchanging and refunding its products), however he eventually tells Brian that he must "dispose" or "get rid" of some evidence, namely a bottle of perfume we can assume was used in the crime detailed in the previous article. To "dispose of (an item)" is to get rid of it, or throw it away.
