none other than | no fewer than | no stranger to

Bruno: Last week I received an invitation from Nick Jagger, asking me to appear in his latest music video.

The following expressions were all used in the letter. Fill in all the blanks with the most appropriate term. Each term is used only once!

none other than | no fewer than | no stranger to

Bruno: Last week I received an invitation from none other than 1 Nick Jagger, asking me to appear in his latest music video.

Brian: Well! I know you're no stranger to 2 celebrity, but this really is something special, sir!

Bruno: The only problem is that I've called him no fewer than 3 twenty-eight times today, and he never answers his phone.
1 none other than: "None other than" is the best choice here. This expression is used to refer to a person who is "famous" or "well-known", as a way of introducing them with emphasis. Example: "I used to go out with none other than Jimi Hendrinks".
2 no stranger to: "No stranger to" is the right answer here. We say that we are "no stranger to" something when we are very familiar with it, or accustomed to it. Example: "The British Royal family is no stranger to controversy".
3 no fewer than: "No fewer than" is the best choice here. The expression "no fewer than" is used to expresses a number in a very emphatic way, stressing how high this number is. Example: "My boyfriend can play no fewer than sixty-eight instruments".
Exercice 2
Sigourney says that her guest is "no stranger to controversy".

What does she mean by this?

Sigourney says that her guest is "no stranger to controversy".

What does she mean by this?
This is not correct. There is no suggestion that Susan Bliss likes controversy: we are simply told that she has been associated with it in the past.
This is incorrect, and quite the opposite of saying that someone is "no stranger to controversy".
This is correct. The expression "(President Butch is) no stranger to controversy" indicates that he is frequently associated with controversial issues. Another example would be: "During his period as Interior Minister, Nicolas Smarkozy was no stranger to controversy."
This is not correct. A person we know well is certainly not a stranger, but the expression "no stranger to controversy" indicates that the person referred to is frequently associated with controversial issues.
