De passé récent: venir de + infinitief

We gebruiken venir (komen) venir, présent + de + infinitief (arriver (aankomen), manger (eten), partir (vertrekken), etc.) om over iets te praten dat heel kort geleden is gebeurd.

De trein is net vertrokken.

We zijn net uit de bioscoop gekomen.

Complete the following sentences in the recent past by dragging the correct words into the blank spaces. Not all the words are used.

Ex. : Nous venons de manger.

Anna [not done] vient d'entrer 1 à l'hôpital. Nous [not done] venons de voir 2 Betty.Vous [not done] venez de prendre 3 une douche.
1 vient d'entrer :

Anna vient d'entrer à l'hôpital (Anna has just been admitted to hospital). We use venir in the present tense (here, elle vient) + de + infinitive (here, entrer) to refer to something that has only just happened. The word de is shortened to d' before a vowel (here, entrer). Another example: Nadia vient d'arriver à l'hôtel (Nadia has just arrived at the hotel).

2 venons de voir :

Nous venons de voir Betty (We have just seen Betty). We use venir in the present tense venir, présent + de + infinitive (here, voir) to refer to something that has only just happened. Another example: nous venons de boire un café (we have just drunk a coffee).

3 venez de prendre :

Vous venez de prendre une douche (You have just taken a shower). We use venir in the present tense + de + infinitive (here, prendre) to refer to something that has only just happened. Another example: vous venez de terminer votre travail (you have just finished your work).

Venir
Je viens 1 de partir.
Tu viens de partir.
Il/Elle vient 2 de partir.
Nous venons 3 de partir.
Vous venez de partir.
Ils/Elles viennent 4 de partir.
1 viens :

Je viens de partir (I've just left). Viens is from venir in the present tense venir, présent. The ending -s is used in the je and tu forms. We use venir + de + verb in the infinitive (here, partir - "to leave") to refer to an event that has just happened. Another example: je viens de finir mon livre (I've just finished my book).

2 vient :

Il /elle vient de partir (He/she has just left). The ending -t is used with the il/elle. Example: Jojo vient d'arriver à l'hôtel (Jojo has just arrived at the hotel).

3 venons :

Nous venons de partir (We have just left). This phrase uses the verb venir (to come) in the present tense venir, présent. Another example: nous venons de manger (we have just eaten).

4 viennent :

Ils/elles viennent de partir (They have just left). This phrase uses the verb venir (to come) in the present tense venir, présent. Another example: elles viennent de se réveiller (they have just woken up).

Select the correct form of the verb venir to complete each sentence below.

Ex. : Roger vient de partir.

La boulangerie vient 1 de fermer.

Je viens 2 de sortir du travail.

Anna et Théo viennent 3 d'arriver à Paris.

1 vient :

La boulangerie vient de fermer (The bakery has just closed). We use vient with the -t ending here as it is the il/elle form. We use venir in the present tense + de + infinitive (here, sortir) to refer to something that has only just happened. Another example: Nadia vient d'acheter une voiture (Nadia has just bought a car).

1 viens :

We could say je viens, where the subject is je (I), but we can't use viens when the subject is la boulangerie (the bakery), which is equivalent to elle. Example: je viens de rentrer (I have just returned).

1 viennent :

We could say ils/elles viennent, but we can't use viennent when the subject is la boulangerie (the bakery), which is equivalent to elle. Example: elles viennent de prendre le petit-déjeuner (they've just eaten breakfast).

2 venons :

We could say nous venons, where the subject is nous (we), but we can't use venons with je (I). Example: nous venons de lire cet article (we've just read this article).

2 vient  :

We could say il/elle vient, where the subject is il/elle (he/she), but we can't use vient with je (I). Example: il vient de se lever (he has just got up).

3 viennent :

Anna et Théo viennent d'arriver à Paris (Anna and Théo have just arrived in Paris). Note that de is shortened to d' before a vowel (here, arriver). Another example: ils viennent d'apporter la commande (they have just brought the order).

3 venez :

We could say vous venez, where the subject is vous (you), but we can't use venez when the subject is Anna et Théo (ils). Example: vous venez de rencontrer Betty (you have just met Betty).

3 viens :

We could say tu viens, where the subject is tu (you), but we can't use viens when the subject is Anna et Théo (ils). Example: tu viens de perdre ton téléphone (you have just lost your telephone).
