1 petit :

L'appartement est très petit (The apartment is very small). The opposite of petit (small) is grand (large). Example: Michel vit dans un petit village (Michel lives in a little village); Londres est une grande ville (London is a big city).

1 peu :

We use peu (little) + noun to refer to a small quantity, but it doesn't work here. The opposite of peu (little) is beaucoup (lots). Example: il y a peu de place ici ! (there isn't much room here!); il y a beaucoup de place ici ! (there's lots of room here!).

1 court :

We use court (short) to refer to the length of something, but not the surface area of a flat, as in this case (9 m2). Example: tes cheveux sont très courts (your hair is very short).

2 bruyant :

C'est très bruyant par ici (It's very noisy here). Bruyant is pronounced . Example: cette rue est trop bruyante ! (this street is too noisy!).

2 bruit :

Le bruit (noise) is the noun associated with the verb bruyant (noisy). Example: je déteste le bruit des voitures ! (I hate the noise of cars!).

2 calme :

Calme (calm) is the opposite of what is shown in this image, as the apartment is very noisy. Example: c'est très calme, la campagne (the countryside is very quiet).

3 cher :

L'appartement est très cher (The apartment is very expensive). The feminine form of cher is chère. Example: ce collier est cher (this necklace is expensive); cette montre est chère (this watch is expensive).

Complete the sentences by selecting the term that is opposite in meaning to the word marked in bold.

« Quelles belles images ! »

« Les acteurs sont excellents. »

Les images sont belles  → Les images sont moches 1.

« Les acteurs sont excellents…» → Les acteurs sont mauvais 2.

1 moches :

The opposite of les images sont belles (the images are beautiful) is les images sont moches (the images are ugly). Example: tes chaussures sont moches (your shoes are ugly); ce manteau est beau (this coat is beautiful). Note: beau is an irregular adjective Beau belle.

1 tristes :

Être triste (to be sad) is the opposite of être joyeux (to be happy), not of belles (beautiful). Example: Anna et Nadia sont tristes quand elles sont séparées (Anna and Nadia are sad when they are apart).

1 drôles :

Les images sont drôles (the images are funny) is the opposite of les images sont tristes (the images are sad), not of les images sont belles (the images are beautiful). Example: mes amies sont drôles, elles aiment bien raconter des blagues (my friends are funny, they like telling jokes).

2 mauvais :

The opposite of les acteurs sont excellents (the actors are excellent) is les acteurs sont très mauvais (the actors are very bad). Mauvais (bad) is the opposite of bon (good), so we could also say les acteurs sont très bons (the actors are very good). Example: ce dessert est très bon (this dessert is very good); cette boisson est très mauvaise (this drink is really bad).

2 sympas :

Sympa is the shortened form of sympathique (pleasant), which is the opposite of antipathique (unpleasant), not excellent (excellent). Example: Nadia est une femme très sympa (Nadia is a very nice woman).

2 petits :

Petit (small) is the opposite of grand (tall), not excellent (excellent). Note: in French, petit is used in all kinds of situations where it doesn't always mean “small”. Example: tu veux un petit café ? (Would you like a quick coffee?); c'est sa petite amie (that's his girlfriend); on se prend une petite bière? (shall we grab a beer?).

Exercício 3

Complete the sentences by selecting the word that is opposite in meaning to the term in bold.

« Vous avez bien dormi ? ».

“Vous avez bien dormi ?” ≠ Vous avez dormi ?

Votre mari ronfle beaucoup ≠ Votre mari ronfle .

Complete the sentences by selecting the word that is opposite in meaning to the term in bold.

« Vous avez bien dormi ? ».

“Vous avez bien dormi ?” ≠ Vous avez mal 1 dormi ?

Votre mari ronfle beaucoup ≠ Votre mari ronfle un peu 2.

1 mal :

Vous avez mal dormi (you slept badly) is the opposite of vous avez bien dormi (you slept well). In the perfect tense, mal/bien is placed between the auxiliary verb (here, avez) and the past participle (here, dormi). Example: nous avons mal/bien mangé (we ate badly/well).

1 mauvais :

Mauvais/mauvaise (bad) is the opposite of bon/bonne (good), not of bien (well). We use bon and mauvais in front of a noun, not a verb as in our sentence. Example: j'ai passé une bonne nuit (I had a good night's sleep) / j'ai passé une mauvaise nuit (I had a bad night's sleep).

1 moche :

Moche  is a colloquial term meaning "ugly". It is the opposite of beau (beautiful), not bien (well). Example: ce tableau est moche (this painting is ugly).

2 un peu :

Votre mari ronfle un peu (your husband snores a little) is the opposite of votre mari ronfle beaucoup (your husband snores a lot). We use un peu to mean “a little” and peu or peu de to mean “not much, not many, few”. Examples: j'ai un peu mangé (I've eaten a little); il a peu d'amis (he has few friends). I hope you're not referring to me!

2 petit :

Petit/petite (small) is the opposite of grand/grande (big), not of beaucoup (lots, a lot). Example: Tom est petit (Tom is small).

2 malade :

Malade (ill, sick) is the opposite of en bonne santé (healthy), not of beaucoup (lots). Example: Jojo a de la fièvre, il est malade (Jojo has a fever, he's sick).
