定义

to betray: 背叛,出卖(某人) verb
Horatio would never betray Bruno.哈里提奥决不会背叛布鲁诺。
to betray a secret 泄露秘密

示例

  • "Godfather : You can't trust Southside Johnny, he'll betray you when you least expect it."
  • "How could you betray me?"
  • "If this monkey were to betray Horatio's secrets to one of our competitors, what are the consequences?"
练习 1
True or False? Delavigne's monkey is definitely a traitor.

True or False? Delavigne's monkey is definitely a traitor.
This statement is not true.
This statement is false. Susie is informing Bruno of the potential consequences of Delavigne's competitors having access to confidential information. However, this situation is hypothetical. Bruno uses a conditional construction when asking Susie about the consequences. Susie replies with the conditional as well, saying "Obviously IF our competitors were able to duplicate our perfumes". This indicates that it is uncertain whether or not Delavigne's monkey has betrayed any secrets.
练习 2
What is the real purpose of Badguy's meeting with Bruno?

There may be more than one correct answer!

What is the real purpose of Badguy's meeting with Bruno?

There may be more than one correct answer!
This isn't the point of this meeting.
This is the primary purpose of Badguy's meeting with Bruno. Badguy tells Bruno that because he no longer wishes to participate in business or criminal affairs, he wants to help Bruno by "putting him in touch" with someone who will provide him with valuable information. The woman on the phone greets Bruno by saying "remember me?" which indicates that Bruno knows the woman from his past.
Badguy doesn't plan to betray Bruno, which describes the act of aiding someone's enemy, or deceiving someone. Badguy makes a point through the dinner with Bruno that he wants to help him, and not to "betray" him.
This is one of the purposes of Badguy's meeting with Bruno. Badguy tells Bruno that he wants to help him by giving him some valuable information. Although it is actually someone else, Clarissa Hope-Hawkins, who will give Bruno the information, Badguy wants to help Bruno obtain this information.
练习 3
Bruno uses the expression: "I hope you won't let me down".
How else could he say this?

Bruno uses the expression: "I hope you won't let me down".
How else could he say this?
This choice is incorrect. "To betray a secret" does not share a similar meaning with the expression "to let someone down".
"I hope you won't let me down" is a common idiom in English, which means "I hope you will not disappoint me". It is often used in situations where one person has been asked to do something (a favor, a service) for someone else.
Bruno is not concerned with how Susie is feeling at this moment. In fact, he hopes that "she" will not "upset" him.
"Let me down" does not mean "being depressed".
练习 4
"Our blood tests reveal that Mr. Cheeter is not taking...the necessary precautions".
In this note, reveal shares a similar meaning with .
"Our blood tests reveal that Mr. Cheeter is not taking...the necessary precautions".
In this note, reveal shares a similar meaning with "indicate".
"indicate": Dr. Shvitzenheimer writes that "Philip's blood tests reveal that he is not taking the necessary precautions". In this context, "to reveal" is very close in meaning to "indicate". The doctor is expressing that Philip's tests "showed" or "indicated" that he has not taken the "necessary precautions" in his personal life.
"betray": To "betray" is not close to the meaning of the verb "to reveal" in this context. To "betray someone" is to break their confidence, or to deceive them in some way.
"divulge": In another context, "to reveal" can mean to "divulge". However when we talk about reports, tests, studies, research or statistics we use "reveal" in the same sense as "to show" or "to indicate". The verb "to divulge" is often used to describe important information or secrets, as in the sentence "the spy refused to divulge government secrets."
"declare": Blood tests can "indicate" or "show" results, but they do not "declare" them. The verb "to declare" can be used in the active sense of someone speaking authoritatively: "I won't accept this insubordination!", Bruno declared. It can also be used in the passive sense to express official decisions: "The politician was declared ineligible for the presidency after it was discovered that he wasn't born in the country."
练习 5
"Someone has singled me out because of my ethnic origin ".

Brian means that someone because of his .
"Someone has singled me out because of my ethnic origin ".

Brian means that someone has discriminated against him 1 because of his racial background 2.
1 has discriminated against him: This is correct. Action motivated by racial differences is "discrimination". To "single (somebody, something) out" means to choose a person or persons from a wider group or "to isolate". Example: "The boss singled me out to lead the new project team."
1 has said he is single: This is not correct. "Single" means "alone" or "unmarried". Example: "I think you'll like my cousin Jock, girls. He's rich, handsome and single."
1 has betrayed him: This is not correct. To betray someone means to fail to keep a promise to that person. Example: "I feel so betrayed. He's leaving me for his secretary's brother!"
2 racial background: This is correct. Brian says that he has received racist (anti-English) abuse. "Ethnic origin" refers to an individual's racial group or background. "Race" is the term used to distinguish between human communities. African Americans, Tutsis and Jews are examples of ethnic groups.
2 dress style: This is not correct. The abuse that Brian has received is anti-English and has nothing to do with his style of clothes. You can dress like someone from another ethnic group, but that won't make you a member. You are born into an ethnic group, and remain a member for life.
2 sexual habits: This is not correct. The abuse that Brian has received is anti-English and has nothing to do with his sexual habits. Brian's sexual behavior is unlinked to the fact that he is English.
