练习 1
Moira and Brent are reporting on a recent earthquake.

Select the TRUE statement from the list below.

Moira and Brent are reporting on a recent earthquake.

Select the TRUE statement from the list below.
This is a true statement. Brent tells us that the initial earthquake "lasted for nearly 50 seconds" and therefore under one minute. The verb "to last" indicates the duration of the initial (or "first") earthquake in this context. Did you know that the longest earthquake ever recorded (in Sumatra) lasted for just under ten minutes? An "earthquake" is a natural phenomenon in which movement below the earth's surface causes severe vibrations above the ground.
This statement is false. Brent tells us that this particular earthquake was the "strongest earthquake to hit the region in over 30 years". This indicates that of all the earthquakes to occur in the region, this particular one was the most severe. We can assume from this statement that there has been more than one earthquake in the region in the last 30 years.
This is a false statement. Moira tells us that no "casualties or damages were reported", meaning that nobody was injured or killed in the earthquake. A "casualty" refers to an "injury" or "death" as a result of an accident, battle, war, etc. The term is often used in the context of war. Example: The President finally admitted the public's discontent over the growing number of casualties in the war.
This statement is false. Although Moira does mention Mexico, she refers to the "Gulf of Mexico", which is the body of water between the west coast of Florida and the east Coast of Mexico. She tells us that the earthquake "struck the West Coast of central Florida". The earthquake did not take place in Mexico, but in Florida.
练习 2
True or false? No humans were killed in the incident.

True or false? No humans were killed in the incident.
This is a true statement. In the article we read that "no human casualties were reported" after the plane landed on the highway. A "casualty" refers to an "injury" or "death" as a result of an accident, battle, war, etc. The goose was the only "thing" that died in the incident.
This statement is not false.
