True or False? Polly has always known about Delavigne's deficient security system.
This statement is not true. Note, the phrase "as far as I can tell" does NOT mean "for as long as I have known". "As far as I can tell (he is telling the truth)" = "from what I can see/as much as I know/to the best of my knowledge (he is telling the truth)".
Polly has only "recently" learned about the status of Delavigne's security system, meaning that she hasn't "always" known about it.

This expression comes very close to expressing the same idea as Philip's line, however the idiom "a little bird told me..." is out of context in a formal business letter such as Philip's. The expression "a little bird told me" is a childish idiom which suggests that a rumor is circulating. For example we could say "a little bird told me that little Bobby is going to ask little Jenny to the dance."
This expression comes very close to expressing the same idea as Philip's line, however the idiom "the word on the street is..." would not be used in the context of a formal business letter, and furthermore it implies that people on the street are talking about McGillicutty's inventory, which is quite unlikely.
Although this expression comes very close to expressing the same idea as Philip's line, there is one very important distinction between the two phrases. This choice mentions "extensive research" which leads to Philip's discovery. The expression in the letter "it has come to my attention" does not express that there was any "research" involved. This choice is incorrect.
"It has come to my attention" is a common idiom which expresses that Philip has become "aware" that McGillicutty's is not yet carrying Delavigne cosmetics. Philip's phrase makes no reference as to how he received this information.
