Near the middle of the dialogue, Philip tells Susie that he spent the weekend reading up on "current events". This means he read contemporary press.
contemporary press: This is the best choice here. Philip says that he has been reading up on "current events", which means that he has been reading the "contemporary press". Note the use of the phrasal verb "to read up on (current events)", this means to acquire information about (a subject) by reading.
history books: Philip says he has been reading "current events" which refers to contemporary news, and not to past historical texts or events.
economic journals: Although Philip mentions an article he read in the "Crawl Street Journal", this is in a different part of the text. We cannot say for sure that "Crawl Street Journal" is an economic journal.
international magazines: Although Philip mentions "international outsourcing", this does not mean he has been reading "international magazines". He says specifically that he has been reading up on "current events".
