This term refers to something that uses computer technology.
'We call computers and some wristwatches and cameras digital 1, because they process information as numbers.'

This term is synonymous with 'instrument', 'gadget', or 'implement'.
'When I got home I discovered a vibrating device 2 on the coffee table, my wife told me it was to massage her back.'
1 digital: 'Digital' simply means that something processes information as a series of numbers, rather than as words or other symbols. Today, it seems like nearly everything is digital! The e-book is digital, the espresso machine is digital, our cars are digital, and so on. Rupert, for one, doesn't seem very enthusiastic about that.
2 device: 'Device' is a word that refers generally to any sort of mechanical object. Rupert calls the e-book 'a newfangled electronic device' meaning it is a new digital object. The word 'device' (a noun) comes from the verb 'devise', which means 'to engineer or create intentionally and deliberately'. So, a device is an object that has been intentionally created, and frequently refers to a tool of some sort.

According to Fred:

Mindmelt is a device 1 that will allow Donna to see people's thoughts 2
1 device: This is the right choice. A "device" is a piece of equipment or a mechanism designed to serve a special purpose or perform a special function. According to Fred, the Mindmelt device is designed to "project people's thoughts onto the screen of a PC or laptop".
1 book: This is not the right choice. There is no mention of "books" in the dialogue.
1 video: This is not the right choice. There is no mention of "videos" in the dialogue.
1 training course: This is not the right choice. There is no mention of "training courses" in the dialogue.
2 see people's thoughts: This is correct. Fred says that the Mindmelt device "allows you to project people's thoughts onto the screen of your PC or laptop". This means that the Mindmelt unit lets the user see people's thoughts. The "screen" (or "monitor") is the part of a computer terminal that displays information and images - the thing that you are looking at right now!
2 improve people's social skills: This is incorrect. Although the Mindmelt unit is designed to be used by psychologists, Fred does not say that the Mindmelt device will improve people's social skills.
2 speak different languages: This is incorrect. Donna says "at last, we're speaking the same language!" to indicate that Fred has found a subject that interests Donna (money!). However, Fred never says that Mindmelt will allow her to speak different languages.
2 set fire to people's heads: This is incorrect. To "set fire" means to cause to burn or ignite. Fred might not be the best salesperson in the world though he wouldn't say something like this about his new product!

Which of the following things might also be referred to as devices? There may be more than one correct answer!
"Books" are not examples of "devices". Although they're great, books are not complex enough to be described as "devices".
This is not a good choice. Food is never referred to as a "device".
Yes, a cellular phone is a type of "device". "Device" is a word that refers generally to any sort of mechanical or electrical object.
This is not a good choice. A bottle of perfume is too simple to be called a "device". It is simply an "object" or "item".
This is a good choice. A printer is a technologically advanced machine with a specific purpose, so it is a device.
