Today's lesson was brought to you by the letter D!

Fill in the blanks below with the appropriate terms used in the broadcast. They both begin with 'd'!

This term refers to something that uses computer technology.
'We call computers and some wristwatches and cameras digital 1, because they process information as numbers.'

This term is synonymous with 'instrument', 'gadget', or 'implement'.

1 digital: 'Digital' simply means that something processes information as a series of numbers, rather than as words or other symbols. Today, it seems like nearly everything is digital! The e-book is digital, the espresso machine is digital, our cars are digital, and so on. Rupert, for one, doesn't seem very enthusiastic about that.
2 device: 'Device' is a word that refers generally to any sort of mechanical object. Rupert calls the e-book 'a newfangled electronic device' meaning it is a new digital object. The word 'device' (a noun) comes from the verb 'devise', which means 'to engineer or create intentionally and deliberately'. So, a device is an object that has been intentionally created, and frequently refers to a tool of some sort.
