Select the best option in each sentence below.

Our new support guy is reliable and efficient 1, unlike his predecessor, who wasted a lot of time and spent ages doing the most simple tasks.

Philip Cheeter's new flirting technique proved to be very effective 2: in one night he gathered the phone numbers of five women, and one very feminine man.

Writing letters by hand can be an effective 3 way of showing your personality, but it isn't very efficient 4 when you consider that word-processing programs do the job much more quickly.
1 efficient: This is the correct answer. An "efficient (person)" is someone who is able to perform in the best possible manner, in a timely fashion, for example: I hired that painter because he decorates in an efficient way, and is able to finish the job quickly. The advert states that Ursula Bauer Environmental Consulting has a very "efficient staff", which means they are competent, capable and work with a minimum of waste. The term "efficient" is often used to describe people.
1 effective: This is incorrect. It is uncommon for the adjective "effective" to be used to describe a person. The use of "effective" here does not make sense in the context of the sentence. An "effective (technique)" produces the intended or expected result, for example: The attack was very effective in destroying the enemy; nobody survived.
2 effective: This is the correct answer. When something is "effective" it accomplishes its purpose, for example: This new report is very effective at highlighting the problems in the department. In the advert we read that Ursula Bauer Environmental Consulting "will provide you with an effective plan", this means that the plan will function in the way it was conceived, and will produce the desired effect or consequence (in this case, making a business more environmentally friendly). Philip's technique is "effective" because he is getting the results he intended.
2 efficient: Although a technique can be "efficient", the term "effective" makes more sense in this construction given the reference to time wasted. Note that both terms are grammatically correct, and the nuance here is very small.
3 effective: This is the correct answer. When a process is "effective" it achieves its desired result or is done in a competent manner. In this sentence, the term expresses that writing letters by hand is a good way to express your personality. Example: Brushing your teeth is an effective way of avoiding bad breath.
3 efficient: This is incorrect. Although these two terms share a close meaning, "efficient" generally conveys the sense of performing a task with a minimum of lost time, effort or energy. In this context, there is no sense of time spent or lost, and "efficient" doesn't fit. To say that "writing letters by hand" is an efficient way of showing your personality is not very logical, especially given the end of this sentence!
4 efficient: This is the correct answer. When something is done in an "efficient" way, it is done "competently" and with a minimum of waste, expense, energy or time. To say that using a word-processing program is an "efficient" way to write (or type) a letter is to say that it saves time, effort or energy. Another example: An electric car is more efficient than a petrol car because it uses less energy.
4 effective: This is incorrect. This construction does not describe how "competent" the process is, but how it functions with the least possible waste or loss. Remember that the term "effective" describes a process which produces the desired or intended result, whereas "efficient" describes the manner or fashion of the process.
练习 2
Keith uses the term efficiency in the text. It is sometimes confused with effectiveness because it has a similar meaning.

Choose the appropriate terms in the following sentences.

The new printer does exactly the same job as the old one but is twice as because it uses half the electricity.

Philip's sales presentation was long and some of his points were unnecessary, but it must have been because everyone bought Delavigne products at the end.

This new operating system is the best in the world. It's a shame it took 1000 engineers five years to develop! We really need to improve our .
Keith uses the term efficiency in the text. It is sometimes confused with effectiveness because it has a similar meaning.

Choose the appropriate terms in the following sentences.

Philip's sales presentation was long and some of his points were unnecessary, but it must have been effective 2 because everyone bought Delavigne products at the end.

This new operating system is the best in the world. It's a shame it took 1000 engineers five years to develop! We really need to improve our efficiency 3.
1 efficient: This is correct. The new printer is more efficient because it completes the same task with less energy and waste. The new printer uses half as much electricity therefore it is twice as efficient. "Efficiency" implies completing a task with minimum effort or time.
1 effective: This is incorrect. In terms of "effectiveness" both printers are the same because "they do exactly the same job" which means they produce the same desired result (we can imagine the printed material is produced at the same speed and the quality is identical). "Effectiveness" implies completing a task "well".
2 effective: This is the right choice. It was an "effective" presentation because it produced the desired result of selling as much perfume as possible. However, it was inefficient in terms of time and effort required because it was overlong and included unnecessary elements.
2 efficient: This is not the best choice here. Because the presentation was long and included unnecessary elements, it was not an "efficient" presentation.
3 efficiency: This is the right answer. In terms of time, money and energy required, the development process was "inefficient" because it took too many engineers too long to complete. Next time they would like to achieve the same, effective result, but in less time and with a smaller team - therefore making it more efficient.
3 effectiveness: This is the wrong answer. The new operating system is the "best in the world" which means that the development was "effective". Therefore, it is not the "effectiveness" that needs to improve.
