Fill in the blanks below with terms used in the broadcast

An isolated person, who is alone and doesn't have any friends or companions is lonely 1.
An overweight person, or someone who is very heavy is fat 2.
A telephone number which costs nothing for the caller is a toll-free 3 hotline.

All of these terms were used in this broadcast
1 lonely: A "lonely" person feels isolated or alone. They need companions and friends. Donna suggests that some of her listeners are "lonely" and asks them to call in to her show.
2 fat: A "fat" person is "overweight" or "heavy". "Fat" isn't the most polite term to describe being overweight! Donna suggests that some of her listeners are "fat" and asks them to call in to her show.
3 toll-free: "A toll-free hotline (or phone number)" describes a hotline which is free for the caller. On its own, the term "toll" refers to a fee or cost (like the fee to drive on a bridge or highway in some places). Donna's phone number at the radio station is free for callers all over the world. Note that in British English a "toll free number" is a "Freephone (number)" and in Australia a "Freecall" number.
练习 2
Donna is convinced that some of her listeners are:

There may be more than one correct answer!

Donna is convinced that some of her listeners are:

There may be more than one correct answer!
An "optimistic" person is hopeful, positive or confident. Donna would be unlikely to say to her listeners "don't give up hope" (meaning "stay hopeful") if she were convinced that they are already optimistic about finding love.
Donna wonders if some of her listeners can't find the right person to share their life with, or have trouble meeting people in general. It is fair to say that she is referring to "lonely" people when she says this. A "lonely" person doesn't have friends or partners and feels alone and isolated.
A "sleepy" person is very tired, or might fall asleep at any moment. Although Donna mentions that her service can make dreams come true, she never specifies "sleepy" people in her audience.
Donna speculates that some of her listeners are "fat" or "heavy" and are "sitting around eating ice cream". She is convinced that her service, "the Love Connection" hotline, is ideal for these people. The terms "fat" and "heavy" are synonymous with each other. Note that "heavy" is more polite than "fat".

Harold Warbuckle and I went to a very expensive restaurant last night. I had roasted lamb with green beans. It tasted awful, I mean really, really bad! It was the most food I had ever eaten. It was delicious and we ate and ate until we were completely . We couldn't eat another bite! Harold and I both agreed that we would never eat expensive food again. From now on, we'll only eat like burgers, pizza, hot dogs and chips. Although we will probably become big and , we can just go on a afterwards.

* Note: "Wool" is a material used to make pullovers, socks and gloves for winter.

1 disgusting: A "disgusting (meal)" tastes repulsive or very bad. In this broadcast, Brent asks Moira if "haggis" is the Scottish word for "disgusting". Note that the term "disgusting" is not reserved exclusively for describing taste or cuisine. Example: The behaviour of that man is disgusting, he has no morals. In this sentence, "disgusting" means inappropriate, morally offensive or repulsive.
2 sheep: A sheep is a four-legged animal that eats grass in fields. A young sheep is called a "lamb", while the female sheep is sometimes called a "ewe". When sheep is cooked and prepared to be eaten, it is occasionally called "mutton" and the dish which is prepared from their ribs is called "lamb chops". The coat or fur of the sheep is called wool or fleece and is used to make pullovers, blankets, vests and other such items. In this broadcast, Brent describes "haggis" as a sheep's stomach stuffed or filled with animal organs. To learn more about the amazing sheep visit a local butcher or sheep farm. Note that "sheep" is both the singular and plural form of the noun: a sheep, the sheep.
3 stuffed: To "stuff (a chicken)" is to fill it until there is no space left. We use the term figuratively as well to describe the sensation of "overeating" or eating too much (the stomach is "full of food", with no room left). In this broadcast, Brent and Moira discuss Haggis, which is a Scottish dish comprised of a sheep's stomach, "stuffed" or "filled" with animal organs. Note that as a noun, "stuff" has an entirely different meaning. The term is a very general way to refer to "things". Example: I have a lot of stuff to do OR There is a lot of stuff on my desk.
4 junk food: "Junk food" is a term used to describe food which has little or no nutritional value such as fast food from McDonald's or candy with artificial colors and flavors. Here the speaker is describing his resolution to eat exclusively low-quality food like burgers, pizza and chips. In the broadcast, Moira speculates that the cause of obesity in America is due to repeated consumption of "junk food".
5 fat: The adjective "fat" describes the state of being "heavy", "obese" or "overweight". Here the speaker is describing the inevitable result of eating only "junk food". In this broadcast, Brent and Moira debate the cause of the majority of Americans being "fat".
6 diet: A "diet" is the particular range or selection of foods that someone eats. Here the term is used as part of the idiom "to go on a diet", which describes eating (or abstaining from eating) certain foods in order to lose weight (or become thin). Here the speaker indicates that after becoming "fat", he will "diet" in order to lose weight afterwards. In this broadcast, Brent and Moira refer to both the American and Mediterranean diet.

Bonus Question!

What term should Edward have used?
(Hint: It has to rhyme with "hat" and correspond to the rest of the sentence!)

Harold wears boots and a cowboy hat,
He eats lots of food which makes him... fat!
fat: This is the term that Edward wanted to sing, before Harold interrupted him. If someone eats too much food, they usually get "fat". A "fat" person is "overweight" or "heavy".

Complete the sentences below using words in the song!

"I should probably go to the gym and get , because I'm feeling really after all the food at Christmas."

Now find another way of saying the second term. It means "heavy" or "big": "Lots of people in this country are because they eat unhealthy food and get no exercise."

Now find the opposite of the term above, and means "too thin" or "skinny": "Kalvin Krime has stopped using models in his catwalk shows, because he feels they are a bad influence." (This term was not used in the song)

Complete the sentences below using words in the song!

"I should probably go to the gym and get fit 1, because I'm feeling really fat 2 after all the food at Christmas."

Now find another way of saying the second term. It means "heavy" or "big": "Lots of people in this country are [not done] overweight 3 because they eat unhealthy food and get no exercise."

Now find the opposite of the term above, and means "too thin" or "skinny": "Kalvin Krime has stopped using [not done] underweight 4 models in his catwalk shows, because he feels they are a bad influence." (This term was not used in the song)
1 fit: "Fit" is the right choice for this sentence. To be "fit" is to be "healthy" or "in good physical condition". Example: "I need to lose some weight and get fit before I visit the doctor next month". Note that there is also a verb "to fit", which has several meanings, including "to be the right size": "These shoes don't fit. They're too small".
1 fat: "Fat" is not the best term to use here. If someone is "fat", they are carrying too much weight on their body. One does not get "fat" by going to the gym. The opposite is true!
2 fat: "Fat" is the better answer here. If someone is "fat", they are bigger than they should be, usually because of too much food and/or too little exercise. "Fat" is quite an insulting word to use. It's nicer to say "overweight" or, in the US, "heavy". The related noun, "fat", refers to a greasy substance found on the body or used in cooking: "When the fat is hot, you're ready to fry your potatoes".
2 fit: This is not the right choice. If someone is "fit", they are "healthy" or "in good physical shape". I've you've eaten a lot of food at Christmas, you're probably feeling the opposite of "fit"!
3 overweight: "Overweight" is the term we were looking for here. We say that someone is "overweight" when they are "too heavy" or "fat". Example: "Overweight children are being sent to "fat camps" to lose weight and get fit".
4 underweight: "Underweight" is the right answer. If you are "underweight", you "do not weigh enough" or "are not as heavy as you should be". Premature babies can be described as "underweight", and so can people who do not eat enough food.
