示例

  • "While Wang has his work cut out for him, the idea that China can compete with the traditional European luxury giants in retail and distribution is no longer a hazy prospect, but now a near certainty."
  • "Though the details of Stink's gruesome murder are still hazy, I'm sure that you understand my deep and pervasive hatred for you, and by extension, all things British."
  • "Polly : Well Susie, I guess that on the Zircondan issue, both your ideas and mine are a little bit hazy."
练习 1
Polly tells Susie that their ideas on Zirconda are a little bit "hazy".
This means that their ideas are .
Polly tells Susie that their ideas on Zirconda are a little bit "hazy".
This means that their ideas are unclear.
unclear: This is correct. "Hazy" is a term used to describe the weather but also ideas. It means that something is "unclear" or "cloudy". In this dialogue, Polly says that neither she nor Susie have very clear ideas about the Zirconda controversy.
prejudiced: A "hazy" idea is not necessarily an "prejudiced" one. It is simply "unclear".
contradictory: A "hazy" idea is not a "contradictory" one. It is simply "unclear".
weird: A "hazy" idea is not a "weird" one. It is simply "unclear". "Weird" means bizarre, for example: The dress she was wearing was weird, it had monkeys on it.
练习 2
"While Wang has his work cut out for him, the idea that China can compete with the traditional European luxury giants in the retail and distribution is no longer a hazy prospect..."

"Wang has his work cut out for him" means that Wang .

A "hazy" prospect is prospect.
"While Wang has his work cut out for him, the idea that China can compete with the traditional European luxury giants in the retail and distribution is no longer a hazy prospect..."

"Wang has his work cut out for him" means that Wang is faced with a difficult task 1.

A "hazy" prospect is an unrealistic 2 prospect.
1 is faced with a difficult task : This is correct. If you have your "work cut out (for you)", then you are aware of the task in front of you, and that it will be a challenge to complete it. In the case of Mr. Wang, his mission to make Chinese companies competitive is not easy, but the work which remains to be done is apparent or obvious.
1 has his future planned out: This is incorrect. Although the expression "to have one's work cut out" suggests the idea of future work, it is unrelated to a "planned future". "To have the future planned out" means that the future has been organized and "designed" in a structured and systematic way. "To plan out" is a phrasal verb which has a very similar meaning "to plan": to organize a course of action.
1 is the right person for the job: This is the incorrect definition. "To have one's work cut out" is unrelated to the idea of being the right person for a job. However, we have a different idiom to express that someone is well-suited for a job: "Jimmy is cut out for the job".
1 doesn't need to work for his money: This is the incorrect definition. "To have one's work cut out" is unrelated to the idea of "needing to work for money".
2 an unrealistic: This is correct. The general meaning of "hazy" is "unclear", "confused", or "uncertain". However, in the context of the article, a "hazy prospect" is a prospect which is "unrealistic" or "nearly unobtainable". The full meaning of the whole sentence is that Chinese companies will soon be able to compete with their European equivalents.
2 an expensive: This is incorrect. "Hazy" does not mean "expensive".
2 a crazy: This is incorrect. Although it sounds similar, a "hazy" is not synonymous with "crazy". A "hazy" prospect is unlikely or uncertain; the term is unrelated to madness.
2 a short-sighted: This is incorrect. "Short-sighted" does not mean "hazy". Being "short-sighted" refers to seeing things clearly only that are near, the medical definition is "myopia".
练习 3
Fill in the blanks below with key terms from this portion of the article.

This term describes a company that is owned or controlled by another (parent) company. "We are a of Doodle Inc, and we respect their management's decisions and policies." (1st paragraph)

This term describes someone or something erratic, variable or unforeseeable. "The weather is in April, you never know whether it will rain or shine." (1st paragraph)

Fill in the blanks below with key terms from this portion of the article.

This term describes a company that is owned or controlled by another (parent) company. "We are a subsidiary 1 of Doodle Inc, and we respect their management's decisions and policies." (1st paragraph)

This term describes someone or something erratic, variable or unforeseeable. "The weather is unpredictable 2 in April, you never know whether it will rain or shine." (1st paragraph)
1 subsidiary: A "subsidiary" is a company whose voting stock is more than 50% controlled by another company (called a parent company). We read in the article that "it wouldn't surprise anyone to see Wang come away with a new western subsidiary to play with." This means that it wouldn't be unexpected to see Mr. Wang buy another company which would become a "subsidiary" of his parent company (Wang Industries).
2 unpredictable: An "unpredictable" person's actions cannot be predicted, anticipated or foreseen; they are inconsistent. For example: I have no idea what is going to happen, the future is unpredictable. In the article we read that Mr. Wang is "one of the most unpredictable players on the Chinese landscape", this means that no one is sure what Wang will do at any given moment.
