This term refers to the rhythm or cadence of one of the most powerful internal organs in the body. "Okay, I'm going to put on my stethoscope to listen to your heartbeat 1. Lub, Dub, mmkay!"

This term refers to written instructions from a doctor to a patient or pharmacist. "I'm going to write you a prescription 2 for anti-depressants, antibiotics, and some Viagra, just in case, mmkay?"

This 2-word term refers to the force exerted by the blood circulating in our bodies. "You have a history of high blood 3 pressure 4 in your family, so you should avoid rich foods and stress, mmkay?"

This term refers to a pain located in the head. "You should take some aspirin if you have a headache 5, mmkay?"

This is one of the most common ailments encountered. It usually involves sneezing, coughing and a runny nose and can be caused by allergies, a virus or bacteria. This term was NOT used in the dialogue. "It seems you have a cold 6 Mr. Jones. You should rest, drink a lot of fluids and stay warm, mmkay?"
1 heartbeat: The "heartbeat" is the sound and movement produced by the heart. "Lub" and "dub" are the names given to the two-part process of the "heartbeat". In this dialogue, Dr. Loblaw listens to Brian's heartbeat, then tells him that it is normal.
2 prescription: A "prescription" refers to written indications for treatment or medication either from a doctor to a pharmacist, or directly from a doctor to a patient.
3 blood: "Blood" is the liquid of life. It courses through our body bringing oxygen to our system. In this scene, Dr. Loblaw states that Brian's blood pressure is normal. Blood pressure refers to the force exerted by the blood circulating in our bodies (against the arterial walls).
4 pressure: "Pressure" (both literally and figuratively) refers to the exertion of force upon a surface by an object, fluid, person, etc. In this case, "blood pressure" refers to the force exerted by the blood circulating in our bodies (against the arterial walls).
5 headache: A "headache" describes pain or hurting in the head. Example: The music was so loud it gave me a headache. In this dialogue, Dr. Loblaw asks Brian if he suffers from "headaches". Note that this term is made up of two words: "head" + "ache". An "ache" on its own describes a painful sensation, and is a common suffix used to describe many types of pain: stomach ache, back ache, ear ache etc.
6 cold: A "cold" is a viral condition which is often characterized by sneezing, coughing and a runny nose. This term wasn't used in the dialogue.

Again, there may be more than one correct answer!

"I hope there aren't any side effects?"

Which of the following sentences use(s) "side effect" correctly?

Again, there may be more than one correct answer!
This is a right choice. A "side effect" can mean any adverse and unwanted secondary effects. However it does not always have to be negative, some "side-effects" can be desirable! For example: "One of the positive side effects of global warming would be lower heating costs".
This is incorrect. The server at McDoodles would give you a strange look if you asked for a side effect of fries! It would be better to ask for a "side order" of fries! A "side order" is a dish that is served with, but is subordinate to, a main course.
This is not a right choice. Perhaps you meant "sound effect"? A "sound effect" is any sound, other than music or speech, that is used to enhance a dramatic presentation such as film or radio program. In the evening I often relax by listening to sound effects CDs. My favourite sounds are "storm" closely followed by "creaking door". And you?
This is correct. A "side effect" is often used in medicine to describe a secondary effect (usually undesirable) of a drug or therapy. In the dialogue, Donna is concerned that using the Mindmelt unit on patients might have a negative "side effect" such as turning people's brains into jelly!
This is a wrong choice. It is unusual to check a contract for side effects. It would be more likely to search for hidden clauses or "small print".

Find the terms used in the questionnaire!

A hole in the body where jewelry is displayed is called a piercing 1. (1 word)

One of two bean-shaped organs that produces urine is called a kidney 2. (1 word)

A pain located in the head is called a headache 3! (1 word)
1 piercing: A "piercing" is a hole where people display decorative jewelry. Example: I have a piercing in my ear so that I can wear earrings. The form mentions "piercings" because unsterilized equipment could transmit infections via blood.
2 kidney : A kidney is one of two organs, located in the back, that filter blood and make urine. Brian writes that he has a "kidney missing", which means one of his kidneys has been removed. Fortunately the human body can function with just one kidney!
3 headache : A "headache" describes pain or hurting in the head. Example: The music was so loud it gave me a headache. Note that this term is made up of two words: "head" + "ache". An "ache" on its own describes a painful sensation, and is a common suffix used to describe many types of pain: stomach ache, back ache, ear ache etc.

练习 5
A "flesh-wound" is .
A "flesh-wound" is a minor injury.
a minor injury: A "flesh wound" describes an injury or wound which is not very serious, or which is "minor". Luna offers to take Trey to the hospital, however Trey refuses, insisting that his wound is not serious. "A flesh wound" is superficial injury, or one which is not very deep. "Flesh" refers to the muscle or fat of the human body, and a wound is an "injury".
a funny anecdote: A "funny anecdote" is a humorous or funny story. Trey is not saying that there is a funny story about his injury, but rather that his injury is not very serious.
an insignificant detail: Trey wants Luna to disregard his injury so that they can move on with the interview. However, a "flesh-wound" is a minor injury, and not "an insignificant detail".
a temporary headache: When Trey calls his injury a "flesh wound", he is referring to the type of injury he has sustained. He isn't saying that he has a "headache" (a pain his head).
