Select the TRUE statements from the list below, according to Brian's report.

Select the TRUE statements from the list below, according to Brian's report.

There may be more than one correct answer!
This is a false statement. Brian writes that Wang Bottling Co (Zhi Zhi Wang's company) "made a name for itself...manufacturing bottles and plastics for (the Chinese brewery) '5 Monkey Beers LLP", it was after this initial success that Zhi Zhi took control of the brewery.
This is a false statement. Brian writes that Lee Wang's father died "without appointing a successor to the Wang fortune." This means that no one was officially awarded Wang's "fortune": his companies, estate, money, and other assets. The terms "heir" and "successor" are synonymous in this context, and refer to the person or people who receive the "inheritance" upon someone's death. To "appoint (a successor)" is to officially and legally select a successor.
This is correct. Brian writes that after Zhi Zhi Wang took control of the "5 Monkey Beers LLP" brewery, the company president, Sum-Young Kai, mysteriously disappeared. Brian then writes that "Three months later, Kai's body washed up on the shore of the Yangtze river", meaning that body of the company president was found by the side of the Yangtze river. Brian is suggesting that the Kai was probably murdered, although he doesn't say who the killer was. My guess is that Wang did it...

Complete the blanks with terms from the audio.

This British term describes someone who gives legal advice or prepares legal documents, it is synonymous with "lawyer" or "attorney". "Philip's solicitor 1 gave him some valuable advice during his first divorce."

This term describes a person who receives money and property when the owner dies. "As the heir 2 to the Oléré family fortune, Horatio will receive several million mosquitoes when his father dies."

This verb means to try and make it appear that something is true, in order to deceive. "When he was at school, Brian would pretend 3 to be interested in girls."
1 solicitor: A "solicitor" is a "lawyer": someone who represents the legal interests of clients, usually in court, as well as providing them with legal advice. Note that this term is very common in the UK, but is not used in the US. Brian says that he has received a letter from his grandfather's solicitor.
2 heir: An "heir" is a person who receives money or property from a deceased (dead) relative. Brian says that as his grandfather's "chosen heir, I'm going to inherit his estate". This means that Brian's grandfather has chosen Brian to receive his grandfather's property in the event of his grandfather's death.
3 pretend: "To pretend" is "to fake" or make it appear that something is true. In the dialogue, Hannah says "I could pretend to be your wife." This means that she could give the false appearance of being Brian's wife - so that Brian can receive his inheritance.
练习 3
What is a "legal will"?

What is a "legal will"?
An "heir" is a person who receives money or property from a deceased (dead) relative. Example: Bruno was Xavier's only heir. A "legal will" indicates who the heir or heirs will be, however a "legal will" is not the same as an "heir".
A "safe-deposit box" is a metal box usually kept in a bank for security, and used for storing valuables. A "legal will" might be stored inside a "safe-deposit box", however "a key to a safe-deposit box" is not the same as a legal will'.
An "official process" is a formal or legal action undertaken to achieve a goal, or to solve a conflict. Example: The official process for foreigners to become American citizens is long and complicated. A "legal will" is not an "official process to resolve a financial conflict".
A "legal will" (or simply a will) is an official document that legally and formally indicates what is to be done with a person's possessions and money after they have died. Example: The will clearly stated that the millionaire's dog should receive his entire fortune.
练习 4
The best term to describe property, material possessions or money which is given by family members when they die is:

The best term to describe property, material possessions or money which is given by family members when they die is:
This choice is incorrect. The term "estate" has several meanings. In the dialogue, it is used to simply refer to the sum of one's "property" or "possessions". An "estate" can also describe a large area of private property in the country, or a large area of property development, such as a "housing estate", made up of many flats.
This is the best choice. An "inheritance" refers to property or money which is passed to family members on the death of their owner. To "inherit (money)" is to receive or acquire it after the death of a relative. Brian says he's going to "inherit" his grandfather's estate - he's going to receive his dead grandfather's money, material possessions and property.
This choice is incorrect. An "heir" refers to someone who receives money or property from a dead relative. Brian is the "heir" to his grandfather's "estate".
This choice is incorrect. Although similar in meaning to "inheritance", the term "heritage" is usually used to describe property (or culture) that is transferred from one generation to the next. Example: Our churches and buildings should be preserved as part of our national heritage.
