Horatio: Giuseppe, you are my son. your father, I demand that you and this octopus be wed.
Giuseppe: you may know, I have the right to stay single. We are than we used to be.
Horatio: I was young, I never believed that society would evolve so much. Is this what it feels like to be ‘woke’?
Giuseppe: No.
Giuseppe: you may know, I have the right to stay single. We are than we used to be.
Horatio: I was young, I never believed that society would evolve so much. Is this what it feels like to be ‘woke’?
Giuseppe: No.
Horatio: Giuseppe, you are my son. As 1 your father, I demand that you and this octopus be wed.
Giuseppe: As 2 you may know, I have the right to stay single. We are more modern 3 than we used to be.
Horatio: When 4 I was young, I never believed that society would evolve so much. Is this what it feels like to be ‘woke’?
Giuseppe: No.
Giuseppe: As 2 you may know, I have the right to stay single. We are more modern 3 than we used to be.
Horatio: When 4 I was young, I never believed that society would evolve so much. Is this what it feels like to be ‘woke’?
Giuseppe: No.
1 As: In this context, 'as your father' means 'in my capacity as your father' or 'because I am your father'. Another example: 'As your grandmother, it is my responsibility to teach you how to play video games'.
1 Of: 'Of' does not make sense in this sentence. We might say: 'I don't like the look of your father' or 'This is the philosophy of my father'.
1 Like: 'Like' is used to make a comparison. For example: 'Like your mother, I disapprove of lying' (Both your mother and I disapprove of lying). It doesn't make sense for Horatio to compare himself to Giuseppe's father immediately after saying 'Giuseppe, you are my son', which shows that he is Giuseppe's father.
2 As: 'As you may know' is an expression used to introduce a fact that the listener perhaps already knows. Another example: 'As you may already know, I am pregnant with quintuplets'.
2 Although: 'Although' is used to introduce a contrast or contradiction. There is no contrast in this sentence. Example: 'Although I learnt Tagalog as a child, I can no longer speak it fluently'.
2 If: 'If' does not make sense in this sentence. Don't confuse 'as you may know' with 'if you must know', which introduces something the speaker is reluctant to say. For example: 'If you must know, I am currently living with my parents'.
3 more modern: 'More' is used to make a comparison. Giuseppe is comparing the modernity of society in the present and in the past. Another example: 'Feminism is more important now than ever before'.
3 as modern: 'As' is used to make comparisons of equality. It is followed by 'as', not 'than'. For example: 'We are exactly as modern as we used to be'.
3 most modern: 'Most modern' is the superlative form of the adjective. It is generally not followed by 'than'. We might say: 'We are the most modern society in the world'.
4 When: Horatio is talking about what he 'believed' in the past, so he uses 'when…' to situate the sentence in the past. 'When I was young' means 'during my youth' or 'as a young person'. Another example: 'When Andrew was a boy, he always dreamed of teaching English'.
4 As: If Horatio used 'as' here, the sentence would imply that because he was young, he never believed society would change. It is much more likely that he is introducing a moment in the past. Note that he could have done this using 'as' with a noun, for example: 'As a young person, I never believed society would change' (meaning 'When I was a young person').
4 If: After 'If I was young…', we would expect to see a statement in the conditional. Note too that it is more correct to say 'If I were young', using the past subjunctive. For example: 'If I were young, I would travel the world'.
