The idiom "I'd be much obliged" is never used with "for". The expression is almost always preceded or followed by an "if" clause (if you could do this, I would be much obliged, or I'd be much obliged if...).
We use "obliged" to express a sense of an obligation or duty, but it can also express gratitude. To be obliged to someone means to be in their debt, and therefore can be used to express gratitude towards them. "I am much obliged" does not mean "I am very busy".
The expression "I'd be much obliged" is a formal way of saying "I would be grateful" or "that would be great". It is almost always preceded or followed by an "if" clause (if you could do this, I would be much obliged, or I'd be much obliged if...) This expression can be shortened to "much obliged" which simply means "thank you". "To lend a hand" is to help someone.
This sentence doesn't make any sense. "To be much obliged" means to be thankful. This construction is illogical because the speaker is expressing that they would be thankful if the mother hadn't helped them.
