Icarus tells Miss Stake that he "takes pride in the appearance of his work habitat".

What does he mean by this?
The idiom "to take pride in (something)" does not express that someone is "proud like a peacock". Peacocks are birds with very colourful tails, and which often walk in a very proud way.
Although Icarus does refer to his office as his "work habitat" he is not comparing it to his own home. Icarus is expressing that he cares for and maintains his office with pride, not that he considers his office to be his second home.
The idiom "to take pride in (something) does not express that someone is 'paid" to do something.
This is the best choice here. Icarus says that he "takes pride" in the appearance of his work habitat, which means that Icarus is "proud" of cleaning and organizing his office frequently, and that he takes a lot of pleasure in doing this activity.
The idiom "to take pride in (something) does not express that someone is 'required" to do something.
