It's time to find some words used in Brian's email!

This word describes when children are not allowed to leave the house because they did something bad: "Bobby can't come to the diner because his dad has grounded 1 him for kissing Shelley."

This term refers to an uneven, rough, or rocky surface: "The road to Twin Peaks is very bumpy 2, which causes a lot of accidents."

Finally, find the word that refers to a penalty or price paid for doing something wrong: "Donna's [not done] punishment 3 was very severe: she was sent to bed with no dinner for a week."
1 grounded: "Grounded" is the right answer. To "ground" a child is to tell them that they are not allowed to leave the house as punishment for bad behaviour. In the email, we read that Icarus has been "grounded" by his mother. Another example: "I've been grounded for telling my mother to fork off".
2 bumpy: "Bumpy" is the best choice here. A surface which is "bumpy" is irregular or rough. Another example: "If I don't take my makeup off at night, my skin goes bumpy and I have to hide in my bedroom for a week".
3 punishment: "Punishment" is the correct answer here. It is the noun related to the verb "punish". When we "punish" someone, we make them suffer or give them a penalty for something bad they have done. Example: "I haven't decided how to punish you, but the punishment will be very horrible".
练习 2
True or False? Bruno is furious with Horatio and plans to punish him.

True or False? Bruno is furious with Horatio and plans to punish him.
This statement is not true.
This statement is false. Although Bruno is indeed furious with Horatio for his actions in Los Angeles, he eventually congratulates Horatio and "hugs" (or embraces) him due to the publicity the company has received. To "punish" someone is to penalize or discipline them for an action. To be "furious" is to be "extremely angry".

Opposites attract!

Below are four terms and expressions used in this dialogue. Choose the antonym for each (the term or idiom which expresses the opposite meaning).

to change your mind --> to make up your mind 1
to be ashamed --> to be proud 2
to forget --> to remember 3
to allow -->to forbid 4
1 to make up your mind: This is correct. To "change one's mind" is to take back a decision, or to make a different decision than the initial one. To "make up one's mind" is to do the opposite: to decide definitively to do something. For example: She changed her mind several times, but eventually she made up her mind and bought the blue pencil.
1 to lose your mind: "To lose your mind" is be irrational, or even to go "mad" or "crazy". For example: After "Dallas" was taken off the air, Horatio briefly lost his mind and broke everything in his laboratory. He calmed down after being given sedatives.
1 to blow your mind: To "blow someone's mind" is to impress or amaze them. For example: Some of his paintings blew my mind. I had no ideas that someone could paint such remarkable images.
2 to be proud: To be or to feel "ashamed" is to feel profoundly humiliated or guilty. To be "proud" is a good antonym for "ashamed". It means to take pleasure or satisfaction in one's actions. For example: After failing the driving test several times, I felt ashamed. Once I passed the test however, I felt proud!
2 to be pleased: To be "pleased" is not a good antonym for "ashamed". To be "pleased" is to feel content or satisfied, however "proud" is a better antonym in this case.
2 to be embarrassed: To be or to feel "embarrassed" shares a close meaning with "ashamed". The two terms are nearly synonymous, but they aren't antonyms!
3 to remember: To "forget (an important meeting)" is to be unable to remember it, or to neglect it. To "remember" is the direct opposite: to keep information in mind or in memory.
3 to remind: To "remind" is to explicitly cause someone to remember something. For example: I left a note on her desk to remind her to call an important client. "Reminding" is different than remembering, and not truly an antonym of "to forget".
3 to get: "To get" is not an antonym of "to forget". To "get" something means to "obtain" or "have" it.
4 to forbid: "To allow (something to happen)" is to permit it or to let it transpire. There are a few terms which could be considered antonyms: to forbid, to deny, to prohibit.
4 to permit: "To permit" is synonymous with "to allow"; both terms mean "to authorize".
4 to punish: "To punish (someone for bad behavior)" is to penalize or castigate them. For example: I punished Bobby for skipping school by taking away his television privileges.
练习 4
"Philip you should be ashamed!"

This could be rewritten as --> "Philip you should be !"
"Philip you should be ashamed!"

This could be rewritten as --> "Philip you should be embarrassed!"
embarrassed: To be ASHAMED is to feel uneasy or embarrassed when you realize you have committed (or been involved) in an immoral or indecent act. Example: I am ASHAMED that I stole money from my grandmother's bedroom. Hannah thinks Philip's desire to see "groupies (or fans)" wearing very little clothing (and showing a lot of their bodies) is indecent, therefore he should be ASHAMED.
silent: To be SILENT is not to make a sound or refrain from speaking. Example: My parents didn't say a word when I told them I was a drug addict - they were completely SILENT. SILENT is not a synonym of ASHAMED.
punished: To be PUNISHED is to suffer a penalty for doing something bad. Example: My boss PUNISHED me for being late by making me work on Sunday! PUNISHED is not a synonym of ASHAMED.
练习 5
Philip would like his secretary to be .
Philip would like his secretary to be fired.
fired: This is correct. In the letter, Philip says, "it is with regret that I recommend she be dismissed as soon as possible". To be "dismissed" is to be "fired" or "to lose your job". Note, Philip's statement, "I recommend she be dismissed" (not "I recommend she is dismissed"), is an example of the infrequently used subjunctive tense. The subjunctive present is generally reserved for statements of insistence, demand or necessity. Example: I demand that he BE fired immediately.
punished : "To be punished" is "to be disciplined" for an action considered to be wrong. In this context, a punishment might be a reduction of financial bonuses, or perhaps a demotion to a more junior position. The term "punished" is not a synonym of "dismissed".
promoted: "To be promoted" is to given a better job in the same company. Example: Philip dreams of being PROMOTED to CEO of the Delavigne Corporation. The term "promoted" is not a synonym of "dismissed".
suspended: In this context, "to be suspended" would mean a temporary pause or exclusion from working. Example: After touching yet another female intern, Philip Cheeter was SUSPENDED without pay for 15 days. The term "suspended" is not a synonym of "dismissed".
