练习 1
Polly appreciates the opportunity to .
Polly appreciates the opportunity to compose a letter by hand.
compose a letter by hand: Polly writes that she "always enjoys a chance to improve her script and cursive writing". Both "script" and "cursive" refer to writing styles which are handwritten. Polly is writing by hand because she is unable to use her email due to the technical problems at Delavigne.
practice her spelling: Polly never writes about her spelling. She expresses that writing by hand is amusing for her because she does it infrequently.
write a formal English letter: Although Polly is writing a letter, there is no indication that it is a "formal English letter". In fact, from the context of the letter, we can assume that the letter is actually informal.
reprimand Bob in a letter: This is not true. Although Polly is at times sarcastic in her letter, she does not reprimand Bob for any reason. Nor does she suggest that she appreciates the opportunity to reprimand Bob.

Fill in the blanks below with the appropriate terms. Most were used in the dialogue you just heard.

The person responsible for the artistic and technical aspects of making a film is called a "director 1".

The person who is responsible for the financial and administrative aspects is called a "producer 2".

The text and dialogue of a movie is called a "script 3".

To select actors for a film is "to cast 4" them.

A film which achieves enormous sales and popularity is often called a "blockbuster 5".
1 director: A "director" is usually responsible for all the creative aspects of a film, such as guiding the actors and technical team. The director is usually selected by the producer, whose job is to make the decisions that are in the best interests of the production company or studio or network.
2 producer: A "producer" is responsible for the financial and administrative aspects of a film production. The "producer" controls things like fundraising (or financing), hiring key personnel, and arranging distributors. In the audio, Herbert asks Bruno to become an "executive producer" which, for his film, involves providing funds for the film in return for getting recognition.
3 script: A "script" of a film is the text of the actors' dialogue (or "lines"). Herbert says "Here is a copy of the script for you to read", which means that he is giving Bruno a copy of the text of the film. Note that the term "screenplay" is often used as well, a "screenplay" usually differs from a "script" in that it includes directions for the visual aspects of the film, and not just the text.
4 cast: To "cast (an actor)" is to select an actor for a film or play, for example: We need to cast a new lead since our main actor has pulled out of the film. Herbert says "We've already cast a bunch of A-list Hollywood actors and actresses" which means that he has selected a number of top actors for his film.
5 blockbuster: A "blockbuster" is usually a film or a book which experiences (or will experience) a large amount of popularity, financial success and sales. Herbert says "It's going to be a blockbuster, babe!" meaning he thinks his film will be a great success. Some other interesting film terms: "sleeper hit" (a film which gains unexpected success), and "box office bomb" (a film which cost far more than the revenue it makes at the box office).
