练习 1
Fill in the blanks below with terms used this scene. We've given you the 1st letter and added synonyms in brackets.
My uncle had a Fauxlex watch. He used to say to me if I didn't have Fauxlex by the age of 50, I would have failed in life. He thought that the Fauxlex (label) represented success, wealth and progress. He thought his watch was a (eternal) classic and that a stylish man as himself was (deserving) of a stylish Fauxlex watch. I never liked my uncle and thought he was as (ostentatious) as his watch. It was no surprise when I found out his watch was a fake.

1 brand: A "brand" is a collective term for the name, trademark, slogan and image associated with a manufacturer and its products. In the dialogue, Bruno talks about "luxury brand like ours": he means that Delavigne Corp is a prestige label that is associated with luxury, high quality or high price.
2 timeless: The term "timeless" is used to refer to items which are "classics" or will not "date" or "go out of fashion" quickly. It shares a similar meaning with the terms "eternal", "ageless" and "enduring".
3 worthy: To "be worthy of (something)" is to "deserve" or "merit" it, for example: Tom Tanks performance of a homosexual autistic alien was worthy of an Oscar. In the audio Bruno says "A gold logo is worthy of a luxury brand like ours", meaning that a gold logo merits a luxury mark like Delavigne. This is slightly unnatural, it would be more logical to say that "Delavigne (a luxury brand like ours) is worthy of a gold logo".
4 flashy: The adjective "flashy" describes something that is cheap, showy, tasteless or ostentatious. Susie says that some people will think the logo is "flashy", meaning that a gold logo may be regarded as colourful in a vulgar way. Other synonyms for "flashy" are: gaudy, garish and showy.

This is not the best choice here. A "signature scent" is one which is made to last: a "classic" which can be worn for a whole lifetime. Example: "Coco's signature scent was called Number 555".
This is not the best choice here. The term "timeless" is used to refer to items which are "classics" or will not "date" or "go out of fashion" quickly. Example: "My grandmother's diamond wedding ring is so expensive and simple that it's timeless. I hope she dies soon".
This is the odd one out here. It's strange to describe a "fragrance" as "ugly". "Ugly" shares a similar meaning with "unattractive" or "unappealing": it is a negative adjective. Example: "My uncle bought me a very ugly china vase for my birthday. I dropped it on the floor".
This is not the best choice here. The term "classic" shares a similar meaning with "timeless", and refers to something which will not "date" or "go out of fashion" quickly.
