The verb "to assume" can indicate that a person imagines or supposes something to be true, whereas it is not necessarily fact. In this sentence, the speaker supposes that their plane will arrive at the airport on time. In English, we often find the verb "assume" in its progressive form to begin a construction which includes a hypothesis or supposition.
