练习 1
Select the TRUE statement from the list below, according to Edward's text message!
Select the TRUE statement from the list below, according to Edward's text message!
This is not the right answer here. In his text message, Edward writes "I'll be there at 3pm tomorrow". "3pm" means "three in the afternoon" or "15:00". He won't be at the hotel tomorrow at "3am" or "three in the morning".
This is not a true statement. In his text message, Edward writes "I love you". When we "love" someone, we like them very very very very much! Example: "I love you! Please marry me and have my babies!". Edward has decided how he feels about Mrs Robinson already!
This is the true statement here. Edward writes, "We are under the name of Mr and Mrs Smith". To be "under the name of (Mr Jones)" means to be "calling yourself (Mr Jones)". This construction is often used when we talk about using a false name, adopting a persona, or pretending to be someone else. Example: "I always travel under the name of Mr. Bond", 'I booked my ticket to see Musical High School II under a false name so that nobody would know it was me".
练习 2
Rearrange the letters to find words used in the conversation! Use the hints to help you.
Example: thole --> hotel
I'm (I'm very tired)
a comfortable (a bed has one of these!)
I have a reservation "Smith" (I have made a reservation using the name "Smith")
Example: thole --> hotel
I'm (I'm very tired)
a comfortable (a bed has one of these!)
I have a reservation "Smith" (I have made a reservation using the name "Smith")
Rearrange the letters to find words used in the conversation! Use the hints to help you.
Example: thole --> hotel
I'm [not done] exhausted 1 (I'm very tired)
a comfortable [not done] mattress 2 (a bed has one of these!)
I have a reservation [not done] under the name 3 "Smith" (I have made a reservation using the name "Smith")
Example: thole --> hotel
I'm [not done] exhausted 1 (I'm very tired)
a comfortable [not done] mattress 2 (a bed has one of these!)
I have a reservation [not done] under the name 3 "Smith" (I have made a reservation using the name "Smith")
1 exhausted: "Exhausted" means to be very tired. "To exhaust" literally means "to use up" or "to consume completely". Example: We have EXHAUSTED our supply of oil. Therefore, if someone is exhausted, they have used up all their energy and are very tired - just like Philip in the conversation: "I'm exhausted and would really like to get some sleep"!
2 mattress: If something is "comfortable" it provides "comfort" and makes you feel at ease physically. Example: This chair is so COMFORTABLE that I often fall asleep in it. A "mattress" is a large pad that is placed on a bed to provide support when people are sleeping. The term "comfortable mattress" is therefore a common word combination. In the conversation, the receptionist tries to make a joke by saying "all our beds are very comfortable - some of them even have mattresses!"
3 under the name: To have a reservation "under the name" (of Mr X) means that you have booked a hotel room using the name (Mr X) . At the beginning of the conversation, Philip says, "Good evening, I booked a room for tonight under the name "Cheeter"". This is a nice way of introducing both your name and the fact that you have a hotel room reserved.
