1 Underground: "The London Underground" is a common name for the metro system in London. The term "underground" means "beneath or below the ground", which is a very appropriate name for this system! In this context, it becomes a noun rather than an adjective. Example: "the London Underground is very expensive", or as an adjective: "Franz works for an underground newspaper". Note that the terms "tube" and "Underground" are only used in British English to describe the London metro system.
2 subway: The term "subway system" is used to describe a network of high-speed trains which carry customers underground. For example, we refer to the "New York subway". In Britain, the term also refers to passages used by pedestrians to walk under a busy road. Example: "I prefer to run across the road at night, because I'm scared of drunks in the subway", "The New York subway system almost always runs on schedule". Note that in this context, the term is mainly used in the US, and not in Britain.
3 metro: We sometimes refer to a network of high-speed underground trains as a "metro" system, which is short for "metropolitan".
