练习 1
For the past three days, Jean has been Susie's desk.
For the past three days, Jean has been below Susie's desk.
below: Susie tells Bob that she found Jean "underneath her desk". "Underneath" shares a similar meaning with "below" in this context: both terms indicate a space close in proximity to the surface, "beneath" Susie's desk. Another way to say that Jean was hiding "underneath the desk" is to say that he was hiding "below the desk".
above: "Above" is not synonymous with "underneath". It actually expresses the opposite meaning. "Above" describes an position which is superior in elevation to another.
behind: "Behind" is not synonymous with "underneath". The term "behind" describes the position of one object, person etc. which is located "in back of" another.
next to: "Next to" is not synonymous with "underneath". If one person stands "next to" another, they are standing adjacent to or at the side of the other.

Bob starts his email by writing "we will be upgrading our accountancy software". This means that Delavigne's existing software will be improved. Note that in other contexts, "upgrading" can also refer to replacing a program with a newer version.
Bob clearly states that he is looking for cheaper alternatives to Miracle software, which indicates that he is concerned about the price of the program. The purpose of Bob's email is to propose three low-cost software alternatives to Bruno.
Bob writes that "the program has its flaws". This means that the program has problems or "defaults". If a program has flaws, it is not perfect.
Bob writes that "the 2000 edition (of Cheapskate software) is available for under $300". This means that the price of the program is "less than $300". We often use "over" and "under" to indicate prices which are "high" or "low".
练习 3
Where are the projected sales figures which Icarus prepared?
Where are the projected sales figures which Icarus prepared?
Do not confuse the adjective "left hand" with an actual "hand". If something is on the "left-hand side" it is located or directed towards the left.
Bruno later asks Polly about Kevin's recommendations FOR a Taiwanese manufacturing facility.
The "bottom drawer" means the drawer "closest to the floor". Underneath expresses something different.
This is correct. Polly tells Bruno that the sales figures are in the "bottom, left-hand drawer of his desk". The "bottom drawer" is the "lowest" drawer, or the one closest to the floor. If something is on the "left-hand" side, it is located or directed towards the left side.

Answer the questions below based on Jacob Flatman's email.
Property 1 is situated in a green 1 area.
Property 2 is painted pink, yellow and pale blue all over 2.
Property 3 has a lot of 3 storage space.
Property 1 is situated in a green 1 area.
Property 2 is painted pink, yellow and pale blue all over 2.
Property 3 has a lot of 3 storage space.
1 green: Property one is described as being "leafy". The term "leafy" refers to an area that is filled with lots of trees, plants, leaves and greenery. A "green area" describes the same type of area, one with bushes, trees, grass etc. In this context "green" and "leafy" are synonymous.
1 run-down: The term "run-down" means to be in poor condition, or deteriorated. This term is not synonymous with "leafy".
1 spacious: The word "spacious" indicates having a lot of "room" or "space". This term is not synonymous with "leafy".
1 safe: The term "safe" means "unthreatening" or "not dangerous". This term is not synonymous with "leafy".
2 all over: Jacob Flatman writes that Property 2 is painted pink, yellow and pale blue "throughout". The term "throughout" means "all over" or everywhere.
2 outside : The term "outside" means on or to the external or outer side. This is not synonymous with "throughout".
2 underneath: The term "underneath" means on the underside, lower face or below. This term is not synonymous with "throughout".
2 in certain parts : The phrase "in certain parts" refers to selected areas or portions, whereas the term "throughout" refers to "all" or the entirety of a surface (in this case).
3 a lot of: Flatman writes that the third property has "plenty" of storage space. The term "plenty" refers to an "abundance" or "large amount" of something. The term is synonymous with "a lot".
3 shared: The term "plenty" doesn't refer to a "shared" storage space, which would indicate a storage space used by two or more people.
3 hardly any: The phrase "hardly any" means "not very much", which is not synonymous with "plenty".
3 limited: An apartment with "limited storage space" has little storage space. This isn't what is meant by "plenty" of storage space.
