Much vs many

Much e many indicano una grande quantità: 'a lot of'.

Importante:
MUCH precede i sostantivi non numerabili:
I don't have much time, and you don't have much money. Io non ho molto tempo, e tu non hai molti soldi.
MANY precede i sostantivi numerabili:
We have many friends, in many countries. Abbiamo molti amici in molti paesi.
Questa importante distinzione si ritrova anche nelle domande con 'How much, how many':
How much + sostantivo non numerabile / how many + sostantivo numerabile:
How much did you pay for the car? Quanto hai pagato l'auto?
How many children does Bob have? Quanti bambini ha Bob?
How many women has Philip slept with? Con quante donne è andato a letto Philip?
Attenzione alle seguenti trappole:
people è un sostantivo plurale preceduto sempre da many, mai da much:
There are too many people. Ci sono troppe persone.
information, luggage (o baggage), e equipment sono sostantivi non numerabili e di conseguenza sono sempre singolari:
How much luggage did you bring? Quante valigie hai portato?
How much information do you want? Quante informazioni vuoi?
Altre costruzioni:
I drank too much wine. Ho bevuto troppo vino.
Do you play tennis as much as you play golf? Giochi a tennis quanto a golf?
This movie is much better than I thought it would be. Questo film è molto meglio di quello che pensavo.
There are as many Americans here as there are in California. Qui ci sono tanti americani quanti in California.

Icarus Quincy has reviewed the income tax forms for the company times this morning, but the figures still don't make sense to him. The numbers just don't add up. It seems like Icarus has another long afternoon of calculations ahead of him.

1 many: 'Many times' is the correct choice here. As a plural noun, 'times' is countable, so we must use 'many' to describe it.
1 much: 'Much' is only used to describe uncountable nouns. Because 'times' is countable, we cannot use 'much' in this case.
2 much: We use 'much' to describe uncountable nouns like 'sense'. The expression 'it doesn't make sense' means that something is illogical, or that it isn't well understood.
2 many: We only use 'many' to qualify countable nouns. Because 'sense' is an uncountable noun, we cannot use 'many' to describe it.
