Should
L'ausiliare should, usato come condizionale, esprime raccomandazioni e suggerimenti:
You should talk to him. Dovresti parlare con lui.
The employees shouldn't behave like this. Gli impiegati non dovrebbero comportarsi così.
Should I bring something to eat? Devo portare qualcosa da bere?
A volte should esprime possibilità:
Horatio should be in his lab right now. Horatio dovrebbe essere in laboratorio in questo momento.
The results of the vote should satisfy everyone. I risultati del voto dovrebbero accontentare tutti.
Should esprime anche il concetto di obbligo e dovere, ma è meno forte di have to e must:
You should be wearing your seat belt. Dovresti metterti la cintura di sicurezza.
Per le azioni passate si usa should + 'have' + participio passato:
Kalvin Krime should have hired Horatio while he was available. Kalvin Krime avrebbe dovuto assumere Horatio quando era ancora disponibile.
Should like to si usa per esprimere un desiderio in modo formale. Nel linguaggio di tutti i giorni, would è più comune.
I should like to visit Uganda one day. Mi piacerebbe visitare l'Uganda prima o poi.
Nota: L'ausiliare ought to è un sinonimo di should:
I ought to go = I should go. Dovrei andare.

When reporting this past thought, this statement becomes: Polly and Philip thought that they would never find the test monkey again.
