1 digital: 'Digital' simply means that something processes information as a series of numbers, rather than as words or other symbols. Today, it seems like nearly everything is digital! The e-book is digital, the espresso machine is digital, our cars are digital, and so on. Rupert, for one, doesn't seem very enthusiastic about that.
2 device: 'Device' is a word that refers generally to any sort of mechanical object. Rupert calls the e-book 'a newfangled electronic device' meaning it is a new digital object. The word 'device' (a noun) comes from the verb 'devise', which means 'to engineer or create intentionally and deliberately'. So, a device is an object that has been intentionally created, and frequently refers to a tool of some sort.
