This term describes repeated patterns of behaviour.
'Consumers are changing their shopping habits 1 and want shops open on Sundays.'

This term describes a conclusion reached after research or an investigation.

1 habits: A 'habit' is a pattern of behaviour that is often acquired through repetition, for example: After smoking two packets of cigarettes I acquired a smoking habit. The text refers to 'fragrance buying habits' which are modes of behaviour when buying perfumes, such as always buying expensive colognes or only buying fragrances at Christmas.
2 findings: A 'finding' is a conclusion reached after an examination or investigation. Example: After his mission to China, Kevin gave Bruno his findings on the factories he visited. We read in the text 'Please find below our key findings' which is a useful expression, often used in reports, to indicate that the main points of the report will follow.
3 surveyed: To 'survey (a group of people)' is to collect the group's opinions, often about things like political views or their attitude to new products. In the text we read that 'over 5,000 males were surveyed by Smell Solutions about their fragrance buying habits' meaning that a group of 5,000 males responded to Smell Solutions market research group and gave them their opinions about buying perfumes. Note that one can also 'take' or 'conduct' a survey.

Read the four extracts in the middle of Brian's notebook again and decide which stage of the testing process is being described.

Fri 14/7 --> ingredient selection and fabrication 1

Mon 17/7 --> appointment of test subject 2

Thurs 20/7 --> preliminary findings 3

Tues 25/7 --> further analysis 4
1 ingredient selection and fabrication: This is the best answer. In his entry on "Fri 14/7" (Friday 14 July) Brian mentions that he is watching the "manufacturing process" and that the ingredients of the perfume are "citrus fruits and mangoes". This describes the "ingredient selection and fabrication" stage of the Horatio's testing process.
1 appointment of test subject: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Friday 14 July.
1 preliminary findings: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Friday 14 July.

2 appointment of test subject: This is the best answer. In his entry on "Mon 17/7" (Monday 17 July) Brian writes that Horatio's latest perfume is ready to be tested' and that "one of the older monkeys, Belinda, has volunteered." To "volunteer" is to offer one's services, in this case Belinda has offered to be used as a test subject.
2 ingredient selection and fabrication: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Monday 17 July.
2 preliminary findings: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Monday 17 July.
2 further analysis: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Monday 17 July.
3 preliminary findings: This is the best answer. In his entry on "Thurs 20/7" (Thursday 20 July) Brian writes that "Belinda shows no adverse reactions to test", meaning that there are no bad effects. This describes the first conclusions, or preliminary findings that have been made after the test was made.
3 appointment of test subject: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Thursday 20 July.
3 ingredient selection and fabrication: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Thursday 20 July.
3 further analysis: This is not the best definition of the stage that Brian writes about on Thursday 20 July.
4 further analysis: This is the best answer. In his entry on "Tues 25/7" (Tuesday 25 July) Brian suggests to Horatio that they should develop a cream form of this perfume, and they give it to Belinda to test. This entry describes a stage in the experiment where further analysis is being done.
