shave | haircut | grow | shampoo | barber | gel | long | hairstyle | short | cut

Customer: Hello, I'm here for my monthly haircut 1.
Hairdresser: Certainly, sir. Take a seat. Would you like me to use shampoo 2 to clean your hair?
Customer: No thanks, I already cleaned it this morning.
Hairdresser: Do you want me to use scissors to cut 3 your hair?
Customer: Actually, I would prefer you to shave 4 it with a razor. I want it very short 5 all over.
10 minutes later
Hairdresser: There you go, sir. What do you think?
Customer: My god, I look like a football hooligan! Do you have anything to make my hair grow 6 back?
1 haircut: A "haircut" refers to the act of cutting one's hair, or the style in which it is cut.
2 shampoo: "Shampoo" is a type of cream or liquid which is used to wash one's hair. The term is both a verb and a noun. Example: I shampoo my hair every day. Note that shampoo is often followed by "conditioner".
3 cut: We usually "cut" hair with (a pair of) scissors. Note that "hair" can be a countable or uncountable noun. When referring to the mass of hair on one's head it is uncountable (and so has no plural), for example: Your hair looks great today. When we refer to individual hairs then it is countable, for example: Waiter, there are three hairs in my soup.
4 shave: To "shave" one's hair is to remove some hair by using a razor or a shaver. In the audio, Brian says that the barber shaved his hair off. Note that adding the preposition "off" (to shave off) would imply that all the hair is being removed. Example: I didn't like my beard so I shaved it off.
5 short: To have one's hair cut "short" is the opposite of keeping it long.
6 grow: In this context, "to grow" means to "increase in size". Most hair grows, as do nails, children and plants. To have hair that "grows back" is to have it regain its original length.

Let's have a look at some adverbs!

Fill in the blanks below with terms used in Bruno's speech.

This adverb means "to a small extent" or "somewhat" or "a little".
"My salary has only slightly 1 increased this year, I'm not happy".

This adverb means "without caution, concern or prudence".
"He carelessly 2 left his car unlocked, and it was stolen soon after".

This adverb means "in a relative manner".
"It's a relatively 3 minor problem, compared to what's happening in Africa".
1 slightly: "Slightly" means "to a small extent" or "somewhat", for example: I am slightly taller than my brother. Bruno says "That's why we've decided to slightly increase the budgets of each department and continue to invest." This means that the boards has decided to increase the budgets by a small amount.
2 carelessly: "Carelessly" means without caution or concern, for example: She carelessly spent all the money I gave her on expensive clothes. Bruno says "we do not spend money carelessly", this means that the Delavigne Corporation is careful with its money, and does not make "careless" purchases.
3 relatively: "Relatively" means in "a relative manner", for example: He's relatively intelligent, considering the stupidity of his father. Bruno says "I'm pleased that our overhead remains relatively low despite our progressive expansion", this means that the company's overhead (fixed costs) is comparatively low.

"S" words! Fill in the blanks with the appropriate terms from the list below. Not all the words are used, and none is used more than once!

scam | scheme | short | shady | spirit | shortage | smart

There is a shortage 1 of food in many parts of the world, while people in rich countries have too much to eat.

I don't trust this email: I think it's part of an online scam 2.

Arthur is a very smart 3 boy: he's top of his class! Unfortunately, this has also made him arrogant.

The local council is introducing a scheme 4 to encourage mothers to use reusable nappies for their babies.
1 shortage: "Shortage" is the right answer here. A "shortage" is a "lack" or "need" of something: we use this term when there is not enough of something. Here's another example: "We predict that there will be water shortages in the UK this summer".
2 scam: "Scam" is the correct answer. A "scam" is a fraudulent business scheme, which usually breaks the law to get money from people. If you receive an email from someone claiming to want to transfer money into your bank account, and saying that they need your bank details to do it, then this is probably a scam. Note that there is a related verb "to scam (someone)". Example: "My grandmother lost her life's savings to a scam: I hate people who scam little old ladies".
3 smart: "Smart" is the term we were looking for. In this context, "smart" means "clever" or "intelligent. Here's another example: "It would be smart to book your Euroscar tickets now, rather than waiting until the last minute". Note that in a different context, "smart" describes someone with a "chic", "neat", or "classy" appearance: 'You should wear smart clothes for the meeting with the Prime Minister".
4 scheme: "Scheme" is the right answer here. A "scheme" is a "project" or "plan". Unlike "scam", the noun "scheme" does not necessarily refer to something fraudulent. Another example: "I'm joining a scheme to rehabilitate young criminals".

With the appropriate terms used in the dialogue, describe the woman Philip is talking to!

Nationality: Australian 1
Height: tall 2
Hair colour: blonde 3
Philip tells the woman that he thinks she is very attractive. He describes her as: [not done] gorgeous 4
1 Australian: "Australian" is the correct answer. In the dialogue, Philip says "are you Australian?" and the woman replies "I am", which confirms that she is indeed Australian. Australians come from Australia, which is a big country famous for kangaroos, koalas, and Kylie.
2 tall: "Tall" is the best choice here. A person's "height" refers to whether they are "tall" or "short". In the dialogue, Philip says "you're tall", meaning that the woman is not short! A useful question is "how tall are you?" to ask someone to tell you their height ("I am 6 foot 2", for example).
2 short: This is incorrect. "Short" people include children, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Tom Cruise. The woman in the dialogue is "tall", which is in fact the OPPOSITE of "short".
2 fat: This is incorrect. "Fat" people are "heavy" or "overweight". There is no suggestion in the dialogue that the woman in the dialogue is "fat". Moreover, the term "height" does not apply to a person's weight.
2 thin: This is incorrect. "Thin" people are "slim", "skinny", or "light". The dialogue does not mention whether the woman is fat, thin, or average. Moreover, the term "height" does not apply to a person's weight.
3 blonde: "Blonde" is the term we were looking for here. If you "are blonde" or "have blonde hair", then you have pale or yellow hair. Famous blondes include Marilyn Monroe and Luke Skywalker. Note that this term can also be written "blond", without the "e"!
3 red: Sorry, but the woman in the dialogue doesn't have red hair. People with red hair include Chuck Norris, Ronald McDonald, and me.
3 brown: Sorry, but the woman in the dialogue doesn't have brown hair. People with brown hair include Bruno Delavigne and Jennifer Lopez.
3 black: Sorry, but the woman in the dialogue doesn't have black hair. People with black hair include Demi Moore and Jackie Chan.
4 gorgeous: "Gorgeous" is the right answer. If someone is "gorgeous", they are very attractive, "handsome", or "beautiful". We can also describe inanimate objects as "gorgeous". Here's an example: "Your apartment is gorgeous. I wish I lived here!".
