Os pronomes tônicos (moi (eu), toi… (você…))
| singular | plural | |
|---|---|---|
Este livro é dele.
- Depois de et (e):
- Como vai? - Vou bem, e você?
- Depois de um verbo no imperativo:
Lave-se!

La plus belle c'est moi (I'm the most beautiful, literally, “the most beautiful, it's me”). Je (I) becomes moi (me) after c'est PRONOMS TONIQUES. Example: - Qui a mangé toute la tarte - C'est moi ! (-Who ate all the pie? -I did!).
Je (I) is a subject pronoun PRONOMS SUJETS, so we can't use it after c'est (it's). Example: je suis belle (I'm beautiful).
Il (he) is a masculine subject pronoun PRONOMS SUJETS, not the tonic pronoun corresponding to je (I). Example: il est beau (he's handsome).
Ce vélo est à lui (This bike belongs to him). Il (he) becomes lui (him) after à (to). Example: cette voiture est à mon frère (this car belongs to my brother)→ cette voiture est à lui (this car belongs to him).
Ils (they) is a subject pronoun PRONOMS SUJETS, and we use it before a verb, not after à (to). Example: ils font du vélo (they cycle).

Tu (you) is a subject pronoun PRONOMS SUJETS, so we use it before a verb, not after et (and). Example: tu vas bien ? (are you alright?).

Complete the sentences with the appropriate pronoun.
ils → Ce sont eux 1 qui font la vaisselle.
elle → Ce pantalon est à elle 2.
vous → C'est vous 3 qui sortez le chien.
Ce sont eux qui font la vaisselle (They are doing the washing up / It's them that are doing the washing up). Ils (they) becomes eux (them) after c'est or ce sont PRONOMS TONIQUES. Note: In spoken French we often use c'est, in the singular, instead of ce sont, in the plural. Example: ce sont eux / c'est eux qui ont triché (they are the ones who cheated/it was them who cheated).
Ils (they) is a subject pronoun PRONOMS SUJETS, so we use it before a verb, not after ce sont (they are, it is). Example: ils font la vaisselle (they are doing the washing up).
Il (he) is a subject pronoun PRONOMS SUJETS, so we use it before a verb, not after ce sont (they are, it is). Example: il fait la vaisselle (he is doing the washing up).
Ce pantalon est à elle (These pants belong to her). The tonic pronoun for elle (she) doesn't change: elle (her). Example: ce soir, c'est elle qui prépare le repas (tonight, she's the one making dinner).
Lui (him) is the masculine form, not the feminine one (elle, her). Example: Ce pantalon est à mon frère (These pants belong to my brother) → ce pantalon est à lui (these pants belong to him).
Elles (them) is the feminine plural form, not singular. Example: Ces pantalons sont à mes sœurs (These pants belong to my sisters) → Ces pantalons sont à elles (These pants belong to them).
C'est vous qui sortez le chien (You are taking the dog out / It's you who's taking the dog out). The tonic pronoun for vous (you) is the same: vous (you). Example: ce chien est à vous ? (does this dog belong to you?).
We can't use tous (all) in this context. Example: vous êtes tous mes amis (you are all my friends).
We could say c'est lui qui sort le chien (He is taking the dog out / It's him that's taking the dog out), because lui (him) corresponds to il (he), not vous (you).
