Some (algum/alguma) vs any (nenhum/nenhuma, algum/alguma)
Usamos some (algum/alguma/alguns/algumas) ou any (nenhum/nenhuma, algum/alguma) + substantivo para falar de uma quantidade indefinida de algo.
Tem some biscoitos no pote.
Não sobrou nenhum café.
Em frases afirmativas, usamos some. (algum/alguma, alguns/algumas)
Tem some manteiga na geladeira.
Eles têm algumas boas ideias.
Em frases negativas, usamos any.
Não há nenhuma manteiga.
Eles não têm nenhuma boa ideia.
Nas perguntas interrogativas, usamos:
- any na maioria das perguntas, ou seja, quando pedimos informações

- some (algum/alguma, alguns/algumas) em ofertas ou pedidos, especialmente quando se espera uma resposta positiva

Nota: some e any são frequentemente combinados com -body (corpo), -thing (coisa) ou -one (um/uma) para criar palavras compostas comuns como somebody (alguém), anything (qualquer coisa), someone (alguém), etc.

You could say There are some books on the shelf in an affirmative sentence, but the original sentence is negative.
