练习 1
What is the meaning of the phrase, "The coffee and cookies will be available in my office from 2:15 until their supply is exhausted"?

What is the meaning of the phrase, "The coffee and cookies will be available in my office from 2:15 until their supply is exhausted"?
Since the cookies and coffee are already prepared, their supply is not dependent upon the endurance and stamina of the cook.
When the "supply" of something is "exhausted" it means that nothing remains. This is what Polly is expressing in her email.
It is a well known fact that cookies have neither vocal chords nor hands, usually necessary when begging or pleading. This choice is incorrect.
Since the subject of the sentence is the coffee and cookies, the hours of the office are not related to their being "exhausted".

Contact lenses 2 are worn on the eyes to correct vision problems, like glasses.
The term "supply 3" refers to the amount or quantity of something available.
Pills 4 are swallowed to produce an effect on the body.

1 disposable: The adjective "disposable" refers to anything which can be thrown away, or which is not meant to be permanent. The term is used in this dialogue to describe "contact lenses", and indicates that the lenses Kevin has ordered are temporary, and can be thrown away after each use.
2 Contact lenses: "Contact lenses" are thin, hard or soft, lenses which are worn on the eyes to correct vision problems. Kevin has ordered "disposable contact lenses" from the pharmacy.
3 supply: A "supply (of medication)" refers to a stock or reserve of medication. The term "supply" has many meanings both as a noun and a verb, but in this context, it refers to the amount or quantity of something available.
4 Pills: A "pill" is (generally) a type of drug which can be swallowed in order to produce an effect on the body. In this dialogue, Kevin orders pills to prevent malaria, as well as anti-biotics which he hopes will help fight a viral infection. Sadly, anti-biotics are useless against viruses. Not sure why the pharmacist didn't tell him that. Seems highly unprofessional to us, but we're not doctors.
5 Condoms: A "condom" is a device made from latex, rubber or a similar material used to protect against sexually transmitted disease, and as a method of birth control. Kevin asks the pharmacist for a small box of condoms at the end of the dialogue.

1 supply: To "supply" means to "provide", for example: We supply water and electricity to the whole of the country. Wang says "I'll supply over half the world's perfume" which means that he will produce, distribute and sell more than 50% of the world's perfume.
2 jet-lagged: A "jet-lagged" person is someone who is experiencing a disruption in body rhythms after passing through different time zones. Often this is in the form of feeling tired and not sleeping after a long flight. Bruno says "I must be jet-lagged from the trip" because he thinks the flight has affected his reasoning.
3 network: A "network" is an interrelated group or system, and can be related to sales, contacts, computers. Example: Warbuckle owns a network of stores. Mr. Wang mentions his "sales network in the east", this is a group of people and companies (situated in Asia) that have a commercial relationship and work together to do good business for Wang.

Fill in the blanks below with terms used in the dialogue you just heard!

This term refers to a storehouse, or large building used to store items: "Jim enjoys his job in the warehouse 1 because he loves big brown boxes".

The term we're looking for here shares a similar meaning with "abroad": "When I'm older, I want to live overseas 2 because I hate my country".

The next term shares a similar meaning with "provisions" and was used several times in the dialogue: "I need to buy supplies 3 at the art shop because I've decided to become the new Van Gogh".
1 warehouse: "Warehouse" is the right answer. A "warehouse" is a storage facility, usually in the form of a large hangar. Warehouses are used to store all kinds of things: merchandise, textiles, cars, drugs, guns just to name a few. In the dialogue, we are told that Horatio's supplies are in a warehouse. Example: "I like to keep the warehouse clean and tidy".
2 overseas: "Overseas" is the best choice here. If something happens "overseas", it happens in a "foreign country" or "abroad". In the dialogue, Horatio has ordered lots of products from "overseas". Example: "Lucy spent eight years living overseas and now she has a strange accent".
3 supplies: "Supplies" is the right answer here. "Supplies" are the "items", "articles", or "products" needed to perform a certain action. The dialogue discusses Horatio's supplies; the ingredients he needs to make his beautiful perfumes. Example: "I love stealing office supplies from work: paperclips are my favourite". Note that there is a related verb: "to supply (somebody with a product)".
练习 5
"My brand is established. It has a built-in customer base. All you do is supply the perfumes, and we rake in the money."

Rewrite this passage using the most appropriate terms. Make sure that both passages express the same idea!

My is established. It has a customer base. All you do is the perfumes, and we the money.
"My brand is established. It has a built-in customer base. All you do is supply the perfumes, and we rake in the money."

Rewrite this passage using the most appropriate terms. Make sure that both passages express the same idea!

My label 1 is established. It has a proven 2 customer base. All you do is provide 3 the perfumes, and we collect 4 the money.
1 label: Correct! A "brand" refers to a "mark" or "label" in this context. Famous "brands" include Armani or Nike. In this dialogue, Nigel tells Bruno that Pilkington Perfumes is an "established brand" in order to convince him that Pilkington should distribute Delavigne perfumes. A "label" can refer literally to a tag or "mark" like you might find inside a t-shirt, however it can also refer to a "brand" or "brand name". For example: Susie only wears selective labels.
1 offer: An "offer" is not synonymous with a "brand", in this or any other context.
1 store: A "store" is not synonymous with a "brand", in this or any other context.
2 proven: "Proven" is the best choice here. "Proven" means "established" or "reliable" in this context, as does the term Nigel uses, "built-in". A "built-in (customer base)", describes a group of clients or customers who can be depended upon to buy services or products, as opposed to a group of prospective clients or customers, who need to be convinced that a product is worthwhile.
2 large: "A built-in customer base" is not necessarily a large one, rather one which is dependable.
2 potential: "A built-in customer base" is not a potential one, but rather one which is real, and dependable.
2 rich: "A built-in customer base" is not necessarily a rich or wealthy one, but rather one which is dependable.
3 provide: This is correct. The verb "to supply" means to "provide" or to "furnish" in this context (and most others). Nigel explains that all Bruno must do in order to make money is give Nigel his perfumes so that he can sell them through the Pilkington distribution channels.
3 create: Incorrect. "Supplying" and "creating" are different ideas. "Creating" a perfume refers to its production or manufacturing.
3 sell: Incorrect. "Supplying" and "selling" are different ideas. "Selling" a perfume refers to its purchase by a customer or other distributor.
4 collect: This is the best choice. To "rake in (money)" is an idiom which describes "collecting", "receiving" or "making" a lot of money. A "rake" is literally a garden tool used to gather or collect leaves. The verb describes "amassing" or "collecting" something as well, in this case lots of money. Example: Our pyramid scheme will allow us to rake in a ton of cash!
4 spend: Incorrect. "Spending money" and "raking in money" are different ideas.
4 invest: Incorrect. "Investing money" and "raking in money" are different ideas. "Investing money" describes putting money in an account, property, stocks (etc) in the hopes of recovering more money in the future.
