Every man has a weakness.
In this context a weakness refers to a vice 1.
According to his statement, Harold Warbuckle's real weakness is hunting 2.
In this context a weakness refers to a vice 1.
According to his statement, Harold Warbuckle's real weakness is hunting 2.
1 vice: A "weakness" shares a similar meaning with a "flaw", which is a "vice", "problem" or "a fault". They are all terms which describe character defaults or bad habits (such as smoking, drinking or killing animals) which occur regularly.
1 dark side: A "dark side" does not share a similar meaning with a "weakness". But seriously Luke, come to the dark side. It's really quite pleasant over here.
1 desire: A "desire" does not share a similar meaning with a "weakness".
1 secret: A "secret" does not share a similar meaning with a "weakness".
2 hunting: Harold lists several "weaknesses" (vices or character defaults), however, in the middle of his statement, he says that his real weakness is "hunting"."Hunting" generally refers to chasing (and killing) animals for sport or food.
2 cold beer: Although Harold does mention his own weakness for "cold beer", this is not his real weakness.
2 Cuban cigars: Although Harold does mention his own weakness for "Cuban cigars", this is not his real weakness.
2 Susan Bliss: Harold never mentions any "weakness" for Susan Bliss, although in my opinion, there might be romance in the air.
练习 2
"What is your greatest strength?"
To have the opposite meaning, this question becomes → What is your greatest ?
To have the opposite meaning, this question becomes → What is your greatest ?
"What is your greatest strength?"
To have the opposite meaning, this question becomes → What is your greatest weakness?
To have the opposite meaning, this question becomes → What is your greatest weakness?
weakness: This is correct. A WEAKNESS is a negative quality that is seen as undesirable. Example: My main WEAKNESS is my addiction to painkillers. "What is your greatest strength?" is used to ask candidates about positive/strong points; "What is your greatest weakness?" is used to ask candidates about negative/weak points.
lack: This is incorrect. A LACK is a deficiency. It is a synonym of WEAKNESS, but we tend to say A LACK OF something - A LACK OF money, A LACK of time - and don't use LACK on its own (what is your greatest LACK? = INCORRECT). Note: sentences like "intelligence is a LACK" or "this website has a LACK" are also incorrect. In these cases, we would probably use a verb (he LACKS intelligence, this website is LACKING something) or just use another term (this website has inadequacies or shortcomings).
failure: This is incorrect. A FAILURE is something that has not worked as hoped. Example: My poetry class for criminals was a complete FAILURE. FAILURE is the opposite of SUCCESS (not STRENGTH), therefore it is not the best answer here.
练习 3

Susie talks about people who have "a weakness for luxury products".

If someone has a "weakness" for luxury products, they:
This is correct. In general, "a weakness" is a lack of strength, power or firmness. However, in this context, "to have a weakness for something" means to have difficulty in resisting something that you like very much. Example: I have a WEAKNESS for chocolate (=I have a special desire for chocolate and I find it difficult to resist).
This is incorrect. "To have a weakness for luxury products" does not mean that you only buy luxury products.
This is incorrect. "To have a weakness for luxury products" does not mean that you cannot afford to buy luxury products. If you cannot afford (a car), you do not have the financial means to buy (a car).
This is incorrect. "To have a weakness for luxury products" does not mean that you rarely buy luxury products.
