Exercice 1
For the past three days, Jean has been Susie's desk.
For the past three days, Jean has been below Susie's desk.
below: Susie tells Bob that she found Jean "underneath her desk". "Underneath" shares a similar meaning with "below" in this context: both terms indicate a space close in proximity to the surface, "beneath" Susie's desk. Another way to say that Jean was hiding "underneath the desk" is to say that he was hiding "below the desk".
above: "Above" is not synonymous with "underneath". It actually expresses the opposite meaning. "Above" describes an position which is superior in elevation to another.
behind: "Behind" is not synonymous with "underneath". The term "behind" describes the position of one object, person etc. which is located "in back of" another.
next to: "Next to" is not synonymous with "underneath". If one person stands "next to" another, they are standing adjacent to or at the side of the other.

Polly uses some practical expressions in this conversation. Listen to the audio clip and complete the blanks. 3 words in each blank!

"Good afternoon, this is Polly Watson, calling [not done] on behalf of 1 Bruno Delavigne... The date has been confirmed for your meeting with Mr. Delavigne. Next Tuesday at 3:30, [not done] as you requested 2."
1 on behalf of: "On behalf of" is a phrase which means "on the part of" or "for" in most contexts. This expression is often found in letters (I am writing on behalf of the citizens of San Francisco), or on the telephone (I am calling on behalf of my client, Bruno Delavigne). Polly uses this expression to explain to Harold that she is calling for Bruno Delavigne or on his part. Note that just the term "behalf" is necessary in this construction.
2 as you requested: The expression "as you requested" describes something which has been asked for, or specified in a previous correspondence. "Requested" is synonymous with "asked for" or "solicited". Example: "As you requested in your email last week, I've removed all the green M+Ms from your snack bowl". Isn't the workplace grand, Bruno?
