O auxiliar should, usado como condicional, expressa um conselho ou uma sugestão:

Além disso, às vezes should expressa uma idéia de probabilidade:

The results of the vote should satisfy everyone. Os resultados da votação devem satisfazer a todo o mundo.
Should pode expressar obrigação, dever, mas, o imperativo é menos forte do que have to e must:
You should be wearing your seat belt. Você deve usar o cinto de segurança.
Para uma ação passada... should + 'have' + particípio passado:

Should like to permite fazer um pedido de forma cordial. Em inglês comum, would é mais usado.

Polly and Philip thought that they would never find the test monkey again.
would: 'Will' becomes 'would' when direct speech ('I will be late') becomes reported speech (He said he would be late). It is exactly the same when we report what someone thought. At the moment of losing the monkey, Polly and Philip think that they will never find the test monkey again. When reporting this past thought, this statement becomes: Polly and Philip thought that they would never find the test monkey again.
