1 astonishing: The adjective "astonishing" expresses an idea of great surprise or shock. In this scene, Bruno remarks that Horatio's (supposed) ability to smell the ideas in books is "astonishing".
2 novel: A "novel" is a book which contains an imaginary or fictional story that is relatively long. In this scene, Bruno and Horatio discuss two novels by Jack Kerouac and another by John Steinbeck. As an adjective, the term "novel" describes something new and rather different. Example: A car which runs on banana skins instead of petrol is a novel idea.
3 plot: The "plot" of a book or film describes the major story line within it. For example: The plot of Jurassic Park is as follows: Cloned dinosaurs cause havoc on a tropical island.
