L'auxiliaire should permet d'exprimer des conseils, suggestions, formant des périphrases à valeur de conditionnel :
You should talk to him. Tu devrais lui parler.
The employees shouldn't behave like this. Les employés ne devraient pas se comporter de la sorte.
Should I bring something to eat? Faut-il que j'apporte quelque chose à manger?
Ainsi should exprime parfois une idée de probabilité :
Horatio should be in his lab right now. Horatio devrait être dans son laboratoire à l'heure qu'il est.
The results of the vote should satisfy everyone. Les résultats du vote devraient satisfaire tout le monde.
Should peut exprimer l'obligation, le devoir, mais l'impératif est moins fort que lorsqu'on utilise have to et must :
You should be wearing your seat belt. Tu devrais mettre ta ceinture.
Pour une action passée... should + 'have' + participe passé :
Kalvin Krime should have hired Horatio while he was available. Kalvin Krime aurait dû engager Horatio lorsqu'il était disponible.
Should like to permet d'exprimer un souhait de façon polie. Notons qu'en anglais courant, would est plus fréquent.
I should like to visit Uganda one day. Je souhaiterais visiter l'Ouganda un jour.
Remarque : L'auxiliaire ought to est synonyme de should :
I ought to go = I should go. Je devrais partir.

had: The auxiliary 'had' must be followed by the past participle of a verb when used to form a perfect tense. We might say 'Horatio had been careful in the past.'
