"Underneath" shares a similar meaning with "below" in this context: both terms indicate a space close in proximity to the surface, "beneath" Susie's desk. Another way to say that Jean was hiding "underneath the desk" is to say that he was hiding "below the desk".
above: "Above" is not synonymous with "underneath". It actually expresses the opposite meaning. "Above" describes an position which is superior in elevation to another.
behind: "Behind" is not synonymous with "underneath". The term "behind" describes the position of one object, person etc. which is located "in back of" another.
